Student Justice Centre Social Media and Marketing Peer Assistant
within the Human Rights and Equity (HRE) Office
Anticipated start date: August 18th

Hourly Rate: $17.20 /hr

The Student Justice Centre is a part of the Human Rights and Equity (HRE) Office at Brock University. HRE is a resource for all Brock community members, which includes students, staff, and faculty. HRE addresses human rights, harassment, and discrimination connected to the Ontario Human Rights Code, and all job applicants are encouraged to review the HRE website. HRE upholds human rights laws and policies and provides equity services to staff, faculty, and students by advocating on behalf of individuals and groups, providing education through workshops and other venues, and offering guidance to those seeking to implement equity in their working and learning spaces at Brock. HRE sees great value in the peer-to-peer leadership model and student advocacy regarding human rights, as student leadership creates a more inclusive, safer campus for everyone.

The Student Justice Centre at Brock University seeks one (1) social media and marketing peer assistant to join our team to empower students to become agents of positive change within their communities and beyond. The Social Media and Marketing Peer Assistant will plan, develop, and deliver social justice social media content for the SJC. They will create posts, campaigns, and videos, conduct outreach to promote SJC, staff drop-in hours for peer support and referrals, liaise with partners, research social justice issues, and prepare marketing materials. The Social Media and Marketing Peer Assistant will be offered a 35-week contract of 12 hrs/week from August 2025 through April 2026 at the St. Catharines campus of Brock University. Successful candidates are expected to be available for both online and in-person program delivery (workshops and events) at the St. Catharines campus of Brock University. Some evenings and weekends will be required. The successful candidates will receive fulsome orientation and training, including job expectations, understanding social justice in the context of Human Rights and Equity at Brock University, leadership development, community engagement, advocacy, as well as necessary information about Brock University. The team members will report to and work daily with the Student Justice Coordinator. If the candidate expresses an interest in developing specific skills, the Student Justice Coordinator will work to facilitate this.

The Social Media and Marketing Peer Assistant will be involved in the following areas of work:

Develop, Design and Manage Social Media

  • Develop and execute a weekly optimal posting schedule (which will include posts about Workshop Series, Drop-In, events, and awareness posts) with the Student Justice Education Coordinator for Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, etc.
  • Possess a strong mix of organizational skills, to ensure all internal Student Justice Centre Team requests are executed and planned effectively, as well as creativity to ensure content is as engaging as possible.
  • Engage in professional conversations in a professional manner. This includes when answering or directing incoming messages from various social media networks.
  • Ensure SJC social media cover photos, pinned posts, profiles, etc. are always up to date.
  • Meet with, as needed, Student Justice Education Coordinator to discuss their social media goals and needs.
  • Research, plan and execute, with the Student Justice Education Coordinator, social media campaigns to increase followers, strengthen relationships with existing followers, or improve engagement.
  • Utilize various technology to create social media content as required (DSLR Camera for taking photographs, Canva to design graphics, TikTok, Instagram Reels etc.).
  • Create and design engaging newsletters, banners, and posters to promote and share upcoming SJC programming to the subscription list.
  • Assist in the planning of promotional, marketing, and awareness campaigns for SJC services, events, businesses, and governance efforts.
  • Assist in the development, execution, and tabulation of various data collection from students.
  • Support marketing department in marketing preparation, including banner finishing, laminating, data entry, etc.

Staff Drop-In and Provide Support Services

  • Staff SJC Drop-Ins hours to provide support and advocacy to students.
  • Provide referrals to students who require additional assistance or who need specialized support services.
  • Create a welcoming and safe space for students who need to talk or require support to feel seen, heard, and supported.
  • Develop and maintain resources for students in need of support, including resource guides, referrals to external organizations, and advocacy tools.

Conduct Research on Social Justice Issues and Best Practices

  • Stay informed on social justice issues and current events, including through academic research and community engagement.
  • Review best practices and research related to social justice initiatives, seeking out innovative and effective methods of promoting equity and inclusion.
  • Use research and best practices to inform programming and advocacy efforts, ensuring that the SJC is providing the most effective and relevant resources and information to students.
  • Share research and resources with the broader campus community through newsletters, social media, and other communication channels.

Liaise with Campus and Community Partners

  • Build relationships with campus and community partners, including committees, clubs, departments, student activist coalitions, and community groups.
  • Collaborate with partners on social justice initiatives, such as joint events or campaigns, to build solidarity and create positive change.
  • Represent the SJC in meetings and events with partners, using the opportunity to raise awareness of the SJC's initiatives and build networks of support.
  • Attend relevant conferences, workshops, and events to stay informed on new developments in social justice work and connect with peers in the field.

    • Wednesday, August 27, 2025: 10 am - 2 pm (Intro to HRE and Community Building)
    • Thursday, August 28, 2025: 10 am - 2 pm (Event Planning, Outreach and Tabling)
    • Friday, August 29, 2025: 10 am - 2 pm (Effective Facilitation and workshop design)
    • Monday, September 1, 2025: All Day - Residence Consent Training
  • Monthly PD:
    • Saturday, October 4, 2025: 10 am - 2 pm
    • Saturday, November 8, 2025: 10 am - 2 pm
    • Saturday, January 24, 2026: 10 am - 2 pm
    • Saturday, March 7, 2026: 10 am - 2 pm
    • Saturday, April 11, 2026: 10 am - 2 pm Annual Wrap Up and Celebration
  • Accountability for time worked will be implemented through the use of time sheets.
  • All SJC Peer Assistants and RA will need to fill out a biweekly SJC report-sheet and discuss it with their supervisor to track the progress of the respective programming and to monitor their professional growth.

Experience:

  • Developing social media content development for publicity campaigns.
  • Understands and supports Anti-Oppression, Anti-Racism, and Decolonial work through lived, theoretical, and practical methods.
  • An interest in this field can be demonstrated through voluntary, activist or advocacy activities.
  • Previous employment experience is an asset but not required.
  • Preference will be given for individuals with lived experience such as members of Black, Indigenous, racialized, 2SLGBTQIA+, Disabled, or other marginalized communities.

Eligibility:

  • Be a current Brock University student as of September 2025;
  • Provide a clear Vulnerable Person Police Check upon hiring.
