Main Purpose & Function
The Sub-foreman Trades is a working supervisory position responsible for leading, directing, supervising and coordinating the daily and weekly activities of assigned work crew(s). Subordinate work crew(s) perform both skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of landscape areas in the park system and sports fields.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
The successful candidate must be able to effectively plan, organize, allocate, review and participate in the assigned duties of subordinates while ensuring the safety of work crews and proper use of materials, tools and equipment. While supervising the work crew(s), the incumbent will be responsible for allocating, checking and reviewing the work performed by the crew. This position is also responsible for maintaining shop records and parts, assisting in the development or application of new and improved work methods and techniques and performing related work as required.

Qualifications
Education and Experience

  • Completion of a Landscape Horticulture Apprenticeship Program supplemented by 4 years of diverse and relevant horticulture and maintenance experience.
  • Valid Pesticide Applicators Certificate for the Province of BC as required.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and supervising a crew of subordinates including Trades Gardeners, Equipment Operators and Operations Workers.
  • Red Seal and the completion of the Vancouver Park Boards Apprenticeship Program is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of various methodologies, best practices, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance of landscape areas.
  • Considerable knowledge in turf maintenance, sport field renovations and irrigation practices.
  • Ability to exercise considerable independence of action.
  • Ability to co-ordinate, organize, assign and supervise subordinates effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to follow written as well as verbal instructions and maintain accurate records.
  • Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions in the trade, such as regulatory requirements, Work Safe BC, WHMIS, etc.
  • Effective interpersonal skills including the ability to build a team and to deal tactfully and effectively with the public, contractors and staff.
  • Ability to accept responsibility for small shop operations and complete assignments with minimal supervision.

Drivers License and Record Checks

Candidates must attach the following records and satisfy the City’s driving requirements to be considered for this role:

  • Copy of your five-year ICBC Commercial Driver’s Abstract (N Print) directly from ICBC dated within 14 days of this posting.
  • Copy of your five-year ICBC Driver’s Claims History directly from ICBC within 14 days of this posting.
  • If you have less than five years driving experience in BC, a request must be made for out of province/country abstract and claims history.
