Shop Foreman

POSITION SUMMARY
The Shop Foreman schedules and directs the repair and maintenance of County vehicles and equipment, including ordering of parts and supplies, maintaining inventory and documentation of work completed. This position will also provide coverage for Heavy Equipment maintenance activities when workloads require it.

KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS: % range of focus
It requires the ability to work independently, yet cooperatively in meeting the needs and requirements of the shop personnel to meet set objectives of vehicle and equipment maintenance programs.
Leadership: (5 - 10%)
- Leads employees, provides ongoing direction and coaching.
- Develops training plans and regularly evaluates performance.
- Mentors, guides, and advises staff members to aid problem solving.
- Fosters an environment of innovation and encourages continuous improvement.
- Supports the County’s Health & Safety program, leads by example, identifies hazards, provides training, and required personal protective equipment to staff members.
Resource Management: (20 – 25%)
- Provides input into operational budget and identification of priorities.
- Provides input into strategic and long-range equipment plans.
- Monitors the progress of the work order system to ensure correct data is being gathered to inform capital investment & operational planning.
- Collaborates with management to develop and maintain an up-to-date asset management plan for fleet assets.
- Utilizes software to establish profiles, manage lifecycle, assign risk, track maintenance schedules, and evaluate cost-efficiency as part of comprehensive asset management practices for fleet assets.
- Approves invoices and monitors expenses within approved budget.
- Provides input and recommendations on equipment solutions and major repairs and solutions.
- Collaborates with Purchasing and Procurement to:
- Complete the tendering process for parts and supplies.
- Monitor all warranties, ensuring the terms are complied with.
- Monitors the life spans of vehicles and equipment.
- Completes weekly status reports.
Shop Maintenance and Operations: (40 – 50%)
- Receives work orders and requests, schedules maintenance and repair work.
- Monitors work orders until work is completed, in a timely and safe manner.
- Manages safety of equipment, monitors completion of logbooks.
- Collaborates with other departments to maintain the service requirements for vehicles and equipment including evaluations of assets considering factors such as age, usage, repair history, and general mechanical knowledge.
- Ensures the shop is maintained in a safe, neat, and orderly manner.
Projects and Assignments
- Covers in maintenance shop when required.
- Completes other related work as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- High school diploma [required]
- Licensed Alberta Heavy Equipment Technician [required]
- Will consider an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
Experience
- Five (5) years Parts/Shop experience; proven mechanical aptitude ability to organize and designate work [required]
- Experience supervising others.
- Experience working with municipal governments [asset]
Other
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driving license [required]
- Current First Aid/CPR certification [desired]
WORKING CONDITIONS (including equipment operated)
- Operate County vehicles.
- Some outside work and travel are required.
- Exposure to gasoline or diesel exhaust, chemicals, solvents, solder, and other products.
- Occasional exposure to noise (vehicles, equipment, tools).
- Moderate to heavy physical fitness level of activity, including lifting/carrying over 50 lbs. on occasion. Perform a range of physical motions including standing, lifting, crouching, walking, sitting, bending, raising arms above shoulders, climbing, etc.
- Operate standard office equipment.
