Job Summary:

The Shift Power Engineer is responsible for filling out all daily logbooks and mechanical handover books, as per ABSA requirements. Will also conduct every three hours chemical testing as required, overseeing the blowdowns of boilers and autoclaves, conducting general maintenance of the facilities ‘A-Pressure’ registered equipment. Tasks include (but are not limited to) daily, weekly, monthly, and annual equipment maintenance, filling out all logbooks, including handover notes and mechanical logbooks under ABSA regulations. Tasks will include PWO/UWO and PM as assigned, skills flex abilities, pre-shift toolbox huddles, shift transitions, pre-start up plans and shutdowns, and inspections of all steam traps on autoclaves. Inspections and clean out of Y-strainers, check valves, air regulators, filters, and separators are also included. Will ensure that the blow downs are completed, water softener systems are maintained, and notify your supervisor of any stock levels that have fallen below minimum requirements.

This role will report directly to the Power Engineer Supervisor, who will be supported by the Maintenance Coordinator and the Maintenance Manager. The Shift Power Engineer will also work closely with all departments and HSE to ensure the safe effective utilization of the company’s ‘A-Pressure’ vessel assets.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Start-up and shut down of Nisku Manufacturing Power Plant including Boilers, Compressors, Portable Boilers, and generators.
  • Complete on the 3-hour cycle the daily checklist of three Boilers, conduct chemical testing one to two times per 12-hour shift, and complete manual and automatic blow downs of all boilers.
  • Maintain and monitor chemical levels, salt levels, and filter levels, and report to supervisor prior to low level limits of all boiler room consumables.
  • 6S all boiler rooms (Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain, and Safety).
  • Complete regular inspections of autoclaves, steam traps, Y-strainers, steam valves, actuators, and positioners. Complete as assigned AIMS Planned Work Orders and Unplanned Work Orders.
  • Work closely with the maintenance department to ensure that the assets on your shift are fully functioning and in good standard order.
  • Report and intervene for any safety and maintenance hazards, as required with maintenance department and production facilities.
  • Coach, mentor, and help develop others in the Power Engineer Department to improve their knowledge (Legislation and Regulations) and skills (mechanical/chemical/pressure).
  • Other duties as assigned by the Power Engineer Supervisor, Maintenance Manager, or Maintenance Coordinator.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Must have a current Power Engineer 4th Class ticket.
  • Able to operate a Power Plant rated boiler based upon your Power Engineering Class level.
  • Must possess a strong mechanical and maintenance background to be considered an asset.
  • A comprehensive knowledge of Boilers, Autoclaves, Receivers, valves, hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical, mechanical, chemical, and boiler maintenance, and safety pressure vessel standards.

  • Fork-lift training considered an asset.

  • Overall Computer Skills.

This position is classified as safety-sensitive, and employment would be conditional on satisfactory completion of pre-employment testing.
