The Shift Leader oversees all operations leading/directing railcar production for the Red Deer second shift (Monday - Friday 3:10 PM - 11:30 PM). Accountable for leadership of skilled labor employees including all aspects of safety, quality, production and cost. Ensures the highest quality work in the most efficient and cost-effective manner possible.
The Shift Leader must clearly understand the impact and importance of quick turnaround times and quality repairs to our customers. This individual sets an example and conducts activities consistent with GATX Policies and Procedures, contributing to a positive and inclusive environment for communication, improvement, and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities:
Key Job Activities:
- Plans, organizes and supervises shift production in accordance with priority goals and availability of resources to ensure adequate and timely completed repairs. Provide leadership, direction and management for the day-to-day operation for all departments ensuring that railcars are appropriately processed and maintained correctly. Performs in process quality audits. Ensures that the departments under their supervision are operated within the confines of the service center operating budget. Ensures that employees operate in a safe manner and abide by GATX Policy.
- Uses technical experience, expertise and problem-solving ability to achieve and maintain a quality repair. Maintains an effective work force by training, counseling and motivating union workers and other management employees. Plans, assigns and directs focus of groups of employees in the production and maintenance classification. Ensures compliance with all GATX Rail and OHAS safety standards polices and environmental regulations; as well as with all GATX Rail, AAR, BOE, and government regulations. Ensures that all paperwork and IT system documentation are complete and accurate. Train and mentor supervisors.
- Communicates work area status/activities to the Production Manager(s). Communicates with other work areas to facilitate smooth car flow. Responsible for shift transition between shifts and shift pass down.
- Ensure that all necessary administrative work is complete and accurate.
Qualifications:
Education and/or Experience Required (including certifications):
- Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent; Bachelor’s degree with emphasis on business management/operations management, industrial technology, engineering, or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in fast-paced production environment.
- Previous supervisory experience.
- Knowledge of Association of American Railroads (AAR) and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) rules and regulations.
- Ability to lead a versatile team.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally, in English.
