Position: Sessional Lecturer I (1 position available at 100%)
Course title and code: Making Sense of Accidents - APS1034H
Course description: Despite the best of engineering practices that include a focus on reliability, human factors, and quality improvement, severe accidents involving complex technological systems occur regularly: bridges collapse, chemical plants catch fire and explode, airplanes crash, and nuclear reactors meltdown. The most comprehensive approach to understanding the causes of such disasters is based on systems engineering, which highlights the limits of traditional event-chain models of causation. The course focuses on this approach using a group project but also provides an overview of the various sociological theories that attempted to elucidate the organizational and psychological factors underlying the failure of sociotechnical systems.

Sessional date of appointment: Summer Session 2025.
Salary: Minimum level of pay is $9,457.89 which includes vacation pay and may increase depending on applicant’s level of experience and suitability for the position.
Qualifications: Applicants should have a strong record of presenting lectures and experience teaching similar topics. The applicant must be able to lecture in a clear voice and explain concepts clearly. The applicant must have experience teaching the course topic or a similar subject.
Brief description of duties: Duties include preparation of lectures and course materials; delivery of lectures; setting and marking of projects, tests and exams; evaluation of final grades; contact with students.
