As part of the ONxpress consortium, Alstom is proudly working to transform the collective mobility of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton areas (GTHA) through the On-Corridor Works project, and we are hiring for hundreds of roles. The GO Expansion scope includes new electric locomotives, train control systems, network electrification, signalling, telecommunications, and digital systems.

Purpose:

  • The Interlocking (IXL) is a system composed of Mechanical, Electromechanical, Electric, Electronic, and Software components aimed at ensuring safe movements of trains.
  • The purpose of the job is to identify and analyze customer and product requirements to define and design standardized IXL architectures and related configurations suitable for tenders, prototyping, series production, and project deployment.
  • The IXL System designer participates in project deployment, addressing specific issues or needs identified throughout the project lifecycle that require corrective or evolutionary actions on the IXL architecture and pre-fitted solutions.

Key accountabilities:

  • In cooperation with Project IXL leads / PrEM / project development team:
    • Capture customer requirements.
    • Capture all internal and external interfaces of the IXL system.
    • Capture the complexity of the yard layouts managed by the IXL system.
    • Capture environmental/climatic installation conditions of the IXL system.
    • Identify trackside equipment to be controlled and detected and application conditions related to trackside engineering.
    • Identify migration needs for the IXL solution (in case of brown-field project).
    • Evaluate space constraints for the installation of pre-fitted configurations of the IXL solution.
    • Consider work methods constraints for the installation of pre-fitted configurations of the IXL solution.
    • Capture IXL product application conditions.
    • Capture IXL product functional features and capabilities.
  • Define components of the IXL system to satisfy customer requirements among the available Alstom products or their evolutions.
  • Lead the design of the pre-fitted solution for Central Interlocking Computer, Remote Area Controllers, and Safe HMI Clients.
  • Produce documents for correct assembly and off-site testing (FAT) of the project solution.
  • Define the IXL equipment breakdown of the project solution.
  • Ensure adherence to reference processes applicable to solution design, methods & tools, requesting deviations when appropriate.
  • Ensure design follows relevant project standards.
  • Support installation and T&C teams during the first installation and testing of the solution, incorporating feedback for continuous improvement.
  • Share knowledge of IXL system features with the project engineering community.
  • Represent Alstom to customers, providing detailed explanations of the IXL architecture solution and features.
  • Select and manage subcontractors (if any).
  • Manage work packages or WP tasks for the definition of new IXL architecture and pre-fitted solutions.

Educational Requirements:

  • Engineering Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronic, Automation Engineering or related technical discipline.
  • P. Eng certification or in progress.
  • Good analytical skills and previous experience in system design & integration, or experience as Project IXL Design leader or signaling product designer.
  • Knowledge of IXL Systems, CBTC, safety principles, and power supply background.
  • 5-10 years in relevant positions in a highly complex and normative environment (railway signaling, aerospace, defense).
  • Knowledge of IXL Alstom product.
  • More than 10 years in relevant positions would be a major asset.
