Senior Specialist, in-house programming, Business & Rights (English Services)

As a Senior Specialist, Talent and Labour Contracting in Business & Rights, you will advise and provide guidance on talent and labour contracts for in-house programming activities to internal partners in all regions across the corporation. You will develop and maintain knowledge of various union agreements such as those CBC has with ACTRA, Writers Guild of Canada, Canadian Federation of Musicians, Canadian Media Guild and their detailed application in contracts.

To be successful in this role, you will provide rights management expertise to production units at all stages of program development, and work with the copyright, licensing and research department to ensure harmonization of whole program rights.

As part of a team who are business managers of the in-house software, PSC Livelink, you will act as a control point/resource to hiring departments who prepare contracts by ensuring they understand business rules associated with the system. You will also be involved in system changes and will be required to work with the IT department to resolve issues and/or general maintenance.

You will monitor use of contract language and, with guidance from your manager and the legal department, draft non-standard language where necessary. You will recommend and implement improvements/changes in standard contract language, formats, practices, etc. and compile data, prepare reports and analyze information on talent and labour contracts; assess recurring trends, and forecast future trends and potential problems.

You will provide information and background research to support and influence CBC’s position for negotiations and arbitrations with various unions, guilds and associations.

You possess:

  • University degree or proven related work experience with a minimum three (3) years’ experience in a related field (i.e. Entertainment Law, Communications Law, Television, Film or Radio Production)
  • Knowledge of Talent/Union agreements, contract language and procedures, Labour and Tax law, TV or Radio production, and their application
  • Effective communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Able to work and think independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to conduct analyses of unique, complex situations and problems to determine how to proceed exercising judgement
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and intrapersonal skills with a strong drive to learn
  • Familiarity and experience with computers, both word processing and database applications
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and respond to urgent demands in short spaces of time
  • Initiative
  • Position requires tact and diplomacy when dealing with clients and discretion in dealing with confidential information
  • Bilingualism is an asset but is not mandatory

This is a full-time, permanent position.
