Job Description


Accountabilities:

  1. Operations
  2. Assist the Thrift Store Manager in executing store operations.
  3. Supervise and participate in sorting and tagging merchandise, unloading donations, stocking shelves, and performing cash transactions.
  4. Assists and supervises a team of employees and volunteers to ensure standards in sales, meeting sales targets, customer service, merchandising, marketing, and public relations are achieved.
  5. In consultation with the Thrift Store Manager, develops and plans the store layout to attract customers, including window and merchandise displays, decides on in-store promotions and auction, and advises on any recommendations for new racks, shelving and signage.
  6. Serves the customers in a courteous and efficient manner by listening to and addressing concerns, suggestions and complaints, notifying the Thrift Store Manager as needed.
  7. Ensures accuracy in the completion of all customer transactions.
  8. Prepares sales summaries when required; contributes to meeting store budgets by maintaining customer service standards.
  9. Retrieves, sorts, prices, and discards or recycles any stale or unsellable items on an ongoing basis.
  10. Seeks to protect the store from inventory shrinkage by close visual monitoring.
  11. Participates in ensuring the maintenance and cleanliness of the store.
  12. Determines and submits requests regarding in-store operational needs and supplies as necessary.
  13. Assists the Thrift Store Manager in completing administrative functions, i.e., sales reports, ordering supplies, etc.
  14. Human Resources
  15. Assists in the recruitment process for staff and volunteers; participates in the regular supervision of staff and volunteers; assists in the completion of regular performance evaluations and appraisals with the Thrift Store Manager.
  16. Assists with staff and volunteer orientation and training for all aspects of merchandise handling including receiving, sorting, stocking and checkout, as well as all aspects of customer service.
  17. Monitors employee and volunteer performance and reports any questions or concerns to the Thrift Store Manager.
  18. In consultation with the Thrift Store Manager, prepares employee and volunteer work schedules; plans coverage for vacation and sick days.
  19. Provides corrective feedback to improve employee and volunteer performance.
  20. Assists in ensuring that all ongoing mandatory employment requirement are met and maintained, i.e., e-learning health and safety training, Praesidium Academy abuse prevention training, and background checks.

Health and Safety

  1. Assists with monitoring staff safety practices in compliance with health and safety standards, policies, and procedures.
  2. Prepares, submits, and acts on incident reports as needed.
  3. Assists with ensuring in-store safety for staff, volunteers and customers, including snow removal, removing barriers from clear passages, cleaning spills, and maintaining store cleanliness.
  4. Ensures property is secure at all times.
  5. Assists in the orientation of new employees and volunteers regarding health and safety procedures, Ministry Unity store policies/promotions, etc.
  6. Reports any serious health and safety infractions or problems in accordance with policies to the Thrift Store Manager.
  7. Works in compliance with OHS Act and Regulations and abides by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.

Critical Relationship Management

Governance Boards and Councils:

  1. Internal relationships:
  • Thrift Store Manager, Corps Officer, Community Ministries Officer, staff, volunteers
  • External relationships:
    • Community, customers

    MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY

    1. This position reports directly to Thrift Store Manager or designate.
    2. Responsible for providing direction and checking results for 3 FTE TS employees and 4 volunteers, but generally works alongside those supervised.

    Financial And Materials Management

    1. Assists with the material management of donations/product flow in the Thrift Store.
    2. Ensures that policies and procedures are adhered to regarding cash handling.
    3. Assists with providing oversight to the cash and debit sales, ensuring the bank deposits balance and are deposited nightly as per store and TSA policy; that the float is secured for the next day.
    4. Assists the Thrift Store Manager in strategizing appropriate actions to attain financial goals and monitoring the cost of goods.
    5. Prepares financial and other requested reports for submission to the Thrift Store Manager, Corps Officer, and Divisional or Territorial Headquarters as needed.

    Working Conditions

    1. This is a permanent, full-time position requiring 37.5 hours per week.
    2. The role involves prolonged standing and frequent physical movements, including twisting, bending, crouching, and lifting/moving up to 40 lbs.
    3. The incumbent may encounter moving objects and individuals who may be upset or aggressive.
    4. In addition to adhering to all health and safety regulations, the incumbent must follow precautionary measures such as universal precautions (e.g., wearing gloves when handling unknown contents).
    5. The work schedule varies weekly and may include weekdays and/or Saturdays.
    6. Work hours and scheduling are determined by the supervisor, and flexibility is required.

    Normal hours of work: The Thrift Store operates Monday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Work shifts are typically scheduled between 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Monday to Saturday, and include a 30-minute unpaid lunch break. Some Monday shifts may be required. Hours of work and store operations are subject to review as needed.

    Education And Experience Qualifications

    Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

    1. Completion of some high school course work.
    2. Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

    Experience And Skilled Knowledge Requirements

    1. Have a minimum of two (2) year of prior related experience, including retail, marketing, and supervisory experience.
    2. Cash handling experience is required.
    3. Experience with cash registers and related processes and procedures i.e., bank deposits, summary reports, etc.
    4. Basic math skills are required to calculate discounts and percentages.
    5. Product brand awareness would be an asset.
    6. Experience working in a computerized environment.

    9. Must provide an original copy of a current Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License and current Driver’s Abstract.
    10. Willingness to undergo and successfully pass required background checks (e.g., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.
    11. Commitment to understanding and supporting the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and applying them to the responsibilities of the position.

    Compensation

    The target hiring range for this position is $17.33 to $21.66 with a maximum of $25.99.

    Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
