Looking for a rewarding job helping to serve the Ontario community? The City of Ontario’s Recreation & Community Services Department has an excellent part-time opportunity for highly motivated individuals to provide programming at a city park, community center, or other recreational areas within the City.

The Senior Recreation Leader will be expected to plan, organize, and lead recreational programs, special events, and activities such as sports, games, and arts and crafts; maintain accurate records, data entry, and process registrations; inspect facilities for safety and preparing reports. Other responsibilities for this position may include explaining policies to staff and volunteers and assisting in their training and evaluation; overseeing events, field trips, activity areas, and the use and maintenance of recreation supplies and equipment.

The Senior Recreation Leader is a part-time/temporary position, scheduled to work no more than 29 hours per week, and is not eligible to participate in the City's health insurance or retirement plans. Work schedule is determined by availability, operating hours and the incumbent's skill level in this position.

Examples Of Essential Functions

  • Plans, organizes, and leads a general program of recreational activities at a city park, community center, or other recreational areas within the City.
  • Leads a variety of activities such as arts and crafts, games, sports, special events, and other special activities as assigned.
  • Keeps proper records; accepts and processes registration.
  • Performs score keeping, officiating, and field maintenance at ball fields.
  • Inspects facilities for safety; maintains records and prepares reports.
  • Monitors facility reservations reserved by occupants outside of the department.
  • Administers First Aid.
  • Assists public at the counter/front desk and answers incoming calls.
  • May oversee the work of other part-time staff.
  • Performs other job-related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualification Guidelines

Education: High school diploma OR recognized equivalent.

Experience: Two years of part-time recreation or customer service experience. Volunteer work, internships, involvement in school activities, participation in sports as an athlete or coach, event programming, and other relevant hobbies will be considered.

Desirable:

  • Two years of college coursework in recreation, physical education, or related field.
  • Previous experience with a local, county, or state agency providing recreation programs/services.
  • Valid California Class C driver's license.

Certification: Selected positions may require the employee to obtain a Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification within a specified time period following their date of hire.

Special Requirement: Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

NOTE: All potential hires are required to pass a fingerprint review and pre-employment physical examination, including a tuberculosis (TB) test.
