The Opportunity:
Join our dynamic team as a Radiation Protection Technician! WSP is currently recruiting for Senior Radiation Protection Technicians with experience in the nuclear industry, to join the Construction & Remediation group located in Port Hope, ON.
You'll play a crucial role in delivering training and coaching to site workers, providing radiation protection coverage to a small team, and summarizing routine data for insightful reports. Your expertise will ensure compliance with radiation safety procedures, maintain essential RP facilities, and support both RP management and site management teams.
This position offers the chance to work outdoors in diverse environments, including rugged terrain and around water, adding variety to your daily tasks. Additionally, you'll have the rewarding responsibility of mentoring and supervising less experienced RP technicians, guiding them to success.
This opportunity is to join the WSP team responsible for the execution and construction of the Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI). The PHAI represents the federal government’s response to the community-requested solution for the cleanup and local, long-term, safe management of historic low-level radioactive waste in the municipalities of Port Hope and Clarington.
Please note we will consider candidates based in various locations throughout Canada, but this opportunity is based on-site 5 days/week at the project site in Port Hope, Ontario.

What you can expect to do here:
- You will measure gamma radiation fields.
- You will measure surface contamination using either radiation detectors or swipe sampling.
- You will collect airborne monitor samples.
- You will manage personal dosimeters for the workforce.
- You will deploy airborne radiological monitors.
- You will ensure control and calibration of all radiation detection equipment.
- You will deliver training and coaching to site workers.
- You will provide RP coverage to nominally 1-10 site workers at any given time.
- You will summarize and analyze routine data for compilation into routine reports.
- You will ensure compliance with site radiation safety procedures by workers and visitors.
- You will maintain RP facilities and equipment.
- You will support the RP management and site management teams.
- You will be expected to walk outdoors (sometimes in rugged terrain) regularly while carrying instrumentation.
- You will provide coaching, mentoring, and guidance to other less experienced RP technicians, and supervise their work.
What you'll bring to WSP:
- Bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering, radiation science or health physics (or related field) preferred.
- Minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience required.
- Individuals with previous work experience as a Sr. RP technician will be considered.
- Demonstrate an understanding of radiation safety principles consistent with their background and training.
- Experience with a variety of survey instruments for the purposes of field measurements.
- Ability to convert between different radiation units.
- Ability to lead small teams to successfully complete a complex task.
- Ability to sort, compile and summarize routine data using typical Microsoft Office products such as Excel.
- Must be able to lift up to 5kgs on a frequent basis and 10kgs on an occasional basis.
- Must be able to stand for up to 3 hours at a time, and/or able to work with arms extended for up to 15-20 minutes at a time.
- Must be able to work at heights and inside confined spaces.
- Eligible for CNL Reliability Status clearance.
- All Sr. RP technicians must be capable of wearing PPE, including respirators if required.
