Your Opportunity

Stantec has an immediate opportunity for an Intermediate-Senior Quantitative Ecologist in either of our British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, or Ontario offices. The successful candidate will possess a broad range of skills in quantitative ecology and be proficient with descriptive and inferential statistical methods and outputs and be able to clearly communicate the same to technical and non-technical audiences both in writing and verbally.

Your Key Responsibilities

  1. Process and analyze data from remote cameras, autonomous recording units (birds and bats), GPS collars, vegetation surveys, and various other environmental monitoring programs.
  2. Understand and implement best practices in data management.
  3. Work primarily with the terrestrial wildlife team, but also integrate and provide support as needed to our marine ecology, freshwater ecology, and vegetation, wetlands & soils teams.
  4. Interpret and communicate information between ecology disciplines, project managers, GIS professionals, engineers, and clients.
  5. Engage with our geospatial team to perform spatial data analysis.
  6. Drive innovation, support decision-making, and provide effective delivery to clients.
  7. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement ecological studies and monitoring programs.
  8. Prepare technical reports, presentations, and publications to communicate findings to clients, stakeholders, and the scientific community.
  9. Mentor and provide guidance to junior staff and interns.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  1. Proficiency in programming languages such as R, Java, and Python and ability to perform reproducible reporting and analysis (using Quarto, Rmarkdown or Jupyter Notebook).
  2. Experience with data processing and analysis from various environmental monitoring tools and techniques.
  3. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data sets and provide actionable insights.
  4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present findings to diverse audiences.
  5. Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  6. Familiarity with GIS software and spatial data analysis techniques is an asset.
  7. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Education and Experience

A minimum of a Master's degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related field. A Ph.D. is preferred.

6-8 years of experience in quantitative ecology, with a strong background in statistical analysis and modeling.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.
