Senior Production Geologist

To lead and coordinate mine geology deliverables for Cote Gold. Provide reliable, consistent and timely information pertaining to geology. Collect, develop, analyze and model geological information for optimum extraction. Report and communicate progress and participate in various mine projects and business improvement initiatives. Provide technical expertise, support, coaching and training to the grade control geologists and technicians. Manage geology consultants and other related stakeholders.

Key Areas of Responsibility & Duties:

Area 1:

  • Participate in recruiting and developing a diverse team of geologists and technicians in accordance with the organizational design strategy.
  • Build and lead a dynamic team focused on grade control, data analytics, effective communication and continuous improvement.
  • Create space for your team to be effective in delivering results and foster an inclusive work environment.
  • Ensure current and future training requirements are met and develop clear progression paths for the team.
  • Mentor and coach team members to impart best practices in safety & all mine geology activities.
  • Promote a high-performance culture by setting expectations, conducting performance reviews, and providing feedback and coaching.

Area 2:

  • Lead and coordinate mine geology activities including researching geological data, grade control, and ore and waste delineation with RC.
  • Coordinate inputs from Exploration, Mine Technical Services, Mine Operations and Mill Operations to produce effective maps and models.
  • Analyze and interpret geological model to ensure alignment with operational objectives.
  • Oversee data and statistical inputs from survey results, recovery results, etc. to adjust plan accordingly.
  • Perform technical analysis of mine plans and designs. Assist the Chief Geologist in the achievement of the short term & 3 months plan.
  • Evaluate trade-offs and recommend solutions. Prepare reports and written materials related to monthly performance and reconciliation, technical recommendations and improvements to the mine model.
  • Other duties as required (ex. scheduling and budgeting)

Area 3:

  • Identify training and development opportunities for the team. Keep abreast of trends in mine geology and impart to Cote Gold.
  • Provide new approaches, methods or policies to optimize performance and ensure compliance with industry regulations and organizational standards.
  • Propose new methods to meet challenges of mine geology.
  • Continuously seek to improve technical knowledge and skills.
  • Conduct research and benchmarking to support decision-making and improve mining processes, technologies and methodologies used for the mine.

Safety & Sustainability Expectations

Directly accountable for the health and safety of yourself, your department and local communities. Directly accountable for ensuring IOC activities are conducted in an environmentally responsible manner. Demonstrate visible leadership on Health, Safety and Environmental performance at all times if in production environments. Be alert and observe, correct and report unsafe conditions. Develop, train and ensure all staff follow operating procedures and comply with all regulatory requirements. Ensure that work areas are in compliance with all of IAMGOLD’s Health and Safety policies and the Occupational Health and Safety Acts in the applicable jurisdiction. Intervene as necessary, to ensure the safety of others in the workplace.

Scope of Responsibility & Complexity

  • Works independently under general direction.
  • Outcomes are reviewed in terms of adherence to general policies, accuracy of methods, and general efficiency.
  • Supervises and directs the work of a support or technical work unit.
  • Work has a significant impact on the responsiveness of support, speed, or effectiveness of decision making.
  • Work is complex involving non-routine technical assignments and need good time management.
  • Work is performed under general direction according to established methods and processes.
  • Problem resolution involves judgment in adapting or applying procedures to address and resolve unusual problem situations.
  • Minimal exposure to disagreeable environment.
  • Work is performed with virtually no exposure to undesirable or disagreeable conditions.
  • Short periods of concentration (i.e. less than two hours) without choice of action.
  • Travel required at 0-20%.

Qualifications & Skill Requirements

Minimum Qualifications, Formal Education, Certifications or Equivalents

  • Post-secondary degree in geology or related field is required.
  • Registration (or eligibility to register) as a Geologist (PGO) or Engineer in Geology (Peng) in Ontario.

Work Experience – Nature & Length

  • A minimum of 7 years of related work experience.
  • Previous experience in an open pit mine is considered an asset.

Additional Qualifications – Competency Requirements

  • Background in geologic models of ore systems and exploration techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and written, with both internal and external contacts and the ability to work with all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent organizational skills, detail-oriented. Must be able to handle a high level of confidentiality. Ability to work with others in a team environment. Ability to organize and prioritize job duties.
  • Pleasant and courteous in interpersonal interactions.
