Senior Plan Checker

We are seeking a Senior Plan Checker (Level 3) to join our dynamic team. This specialized technical role is critical in ensuring that construction projects, alterations, and additions to buildings and structures comply with the necessary safety and design standards before building permits are issued. The successful candidate will be responsible for reviewing complex plans for compliance with building codes, fire safety regulations, and municipal by-laws, while providing expert guidance and support to internal and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Examine construction plans for industrial, commercial, residential, and mixed-use buildings to ensure compliance with the B.C. Building Code, National Fire Code, and municipal zoning and safety by-laws.
  2. Liaise with architects, engineers, contractors, and municipal departments to clarify design issues, resolve non-conformance, and provide interpretations of codes and regulations.
  3. Facilitate the timely processing of building permit applications across municipal departments, ensuring all necessary approvals and recommendations are secured.
  4. Provide expert support to building inspectors and municipal staff on code interpretation, materials substitution, and revisions to approved plans.
  5. Assist in the development of departmental staff and support ongoing training in building code and regulatory interpretation.


Knowledge & Skills

  1. In-depth knowledge of the B.C. Building Code, National Fire Code, municipal zoning and safety by-laws, and fire prevention regulations.
  2. Strong ability to read and interpret plans, drawings, and specifications, with a keen eye for structural and safety compliance.
  3. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work with a variety of stakeholders, including municipal departments, contractors, and the public.
  4. Strong organizational skills to coordinate permit applications and resolve complex technical issues.


Qualifications

  1. Graduation from an Institute of Technology with a Diploma in Building Technology, supplemented by a Building Officials Association of British Columbia Level III Certificate.
  2. Considerable related experience in the building, architectural, or engineering fields or in the municipal sector is preferred, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  3. A Valid Class 5 Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia.
