Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced and driven Senior Operations Manager to oversee our Fort St. John operations. This leadership role is responsible for managing day-to-day operations across multiple service lines, collections (primary), landfills and transfer stations, and infrastructure. The Senior Operations Manager will play a key role in driving operational efficiency, ensuring safety standards, and contributing to the financial and strategic success of the region.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operational Leadership:
Oversee daily operations to ensure efficient, cost-effective service delivery while meeting GFL’s standards for quality, safety, and environmental compliance.
- Team Management:
Lead, mentor, and develop a team of operations staff, including drivers, supervisors, and administrative support. Foster a collaborative, high-performance work environment that aligns with GFL’s core values.
- Financial Performance:
Drive operational budgets, including revenue, cost controls, and profitability targets. Monitor financial performance and implement strategies for continuous improvement in cost management and operational efficiencies.
- Safety & Compliance:
Champion GFL’s commitment to safety by ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and company policies. Lead safety programs, training, and initiatives to maintain a safe work environment.
- Customer Relations:
Build and maintain strong relationships with key customers, ensuring satisfaction with GFL services. Address customer inquiries, service issues, and feedback promptly and effectively.
- Strategic Growth:
Collaborate with regional leadership to identify growth opportunities, optimize routes, and expand service offerings. Participate in regional strategic planning and contribute to achieving long-term goals.
- Continuous Improvement:
Identify and implement process improvements to enhance operational efficiency. Work closely with cross-functional teams to streamline operations and incorporate best practices.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in business, operations management, environmental sciences, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- 7+ years of experience in operations management, preferably in the environmental services, waste management, or related industries.
- Strong leadership and team management skills with experience in mentoring and developing teams.
- Proven track record of financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, and cost control.
- Exceptional problem-solving and decision-making abilities with a focus on operational excellence.
- Strong understanding of safety regulations, compliance, and environmental policies.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a customer-focused approach.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) Position Specifics:
- Operational Expertise:
Extensive knowledge of operations management in the waste management, environmental services, or logistics industries, with a strong understanding of service delivery, route optimization, and resource allocation.
- Financial Acumen:
Demonstrated ability to manage operational budgets, perform cost analysis, and meet financial targets. Strong skills in forecasting, cost control, and strategic financial planning.
- Leadership & Team Development:
Proven ability to lead diverse teams, manage performance, and foster an environment of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Ability to mentor and develop future leaders within the organization.
- Safety and Compliance Knowledge:
In-depth understanding of safety regulations, compliance standards, and environmental laws specific to the industry. Ability to implement and promote safety initiatives and ensure all operational activities meet regulatory standards.

Strong analytical skills to identify issues, evaluate solutions, and implement effective strategies to resolve operational challenges. Ability to make sound decisions quickly in a fast-paced environment.

This position will involve moderate travel, leading Solid Waste Business Units in Fort St. John, Dawson, and Chetwynd and will report into the General Manager of Northern Alberta & British Columbia.
