About the Role

Capital One is looking for an energetic, collaborative, and results-driven government relations and public affairs professional, who deeply understands the Canadian federal government and regulatory landscape and has experience driving business results through advocacy and positive stakeholder relationships.

This role will include monitoring, analysis, and tracking of government and legislative activities, industry hearings for issues that impact the company ranging from consumer financial products and privacy, to regulatory structure, employment, and intellectual property matters. This individual will help determine relevant weekly industry, committee, and legislative priorities and provide relevant updates internally regarding the status and impacts of key hearings and relevant pending legislation.

This individual will partner with Canadian business leaders, government stakeholders, global public affairs and communication counterparts as well as external industry partners to build and lead strategic, integrated, and external-facing thought leadership campaigns across a variety of stakeholder groups to highlight Capital One Canada’s human-centered, tech-forward products, and offerings to bolster awareness and the positive perception of Capital One amongst key audiences.

This position requires exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills; deep understanding of and experience working within the federal and provincial government, policy and regulatory landscape, along with experience supporting senior executive leaders while also leading complex projects and teams to meet objectives as well as the ability to build trusted relationships - with both internal and external stakeholders - operating in a fast-paced, matrixed environment.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Monitor and track legislative and administrative activities related to issues of importance to the company;
  • Develop summaries of relevant federal and provincial government activities including committee hearings, as well as industry trade meetings on issues of importance;
  • Advance, summarize, and share the impact of relevant public policy issues with Capital One Canada senior leadership and associates through presentations, panels, and written communications;
  • Work with internal stakeholders as needed to support Capital One’s business objectives through the development of external key messaging and presentations;
  • Identify reputation building opportunities mapped to strategic business objectives and develop and implement activation plans to influence desired actions and outcomes;
  • Attend external industry and partnership meetings and events on behalf of Capital One Canada;
  • Support the Corporate Communications team through the execution of multi-channel thought leadership and reputation-building campaigns, including pitching stories to reporters, along with the development of key messaging and content;
  • Leverage data and insights to inform proactive and reactive programming;
  • Stay abreast of evolving trends in the political, policy, and media environment and apply insights to ongoing strategy and execution;
  • Work seamlessly as part of a cross-functional team, in an open and collaborative environment;
  • Project manage and coordinate programs across multiple internal and external stakeholder groups.

This person will…

  • Possess knowledge of key policy areas and key figures within the federal government and relevant regulatory bodies specifically within the financial services industry, exhibiting broad understanding of the Canadian political landscape, leading trends, and changes in advocacy and political and regulatory landscapes;
  • Demonstrate outstanding communication and collaborative partnership skills, which are essential for interacting and communicating with key stakeholders across all levels to manage, inform, and influence outcomes;
  • Demonstrate organizational agility to adapt to changing business needs and external industry changes;
  • Strong experience in policy development, relationship building, and political communications and messaging;
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work as part of a high-performing and cross-functional team;
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the Canadian federal legislative and political process, along with working knowledge of provincial government processes.

Qualifications

Basic

  • Possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree;
  • Have at least ten years of public affairs or government relations experience with a minimum of seven years communications experience;

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with or for elected officials within Canada, regulatory agencies, and/or political campaigns.
  • Client Services experience in a consulting and/or corporate setting, such as a PR agency, trade association, or in-house for a private sector business.
  • Experience working in a highly regulated industry, such as financial services.
  • Experience working with members of the media.
  • Experience integrating data and research into messaging and earned media plans.
