We are currently seeking a senior lawyer with a proven record of customer service and a practical, problem-solving approach to providing commercial legal services in a technology-enabled, data-driven corporate legal department. The successful candidate needs to be a hands-on commercial lawyer with extensive experience with complex software (including SaaS) deals, exceptional communication skills, capable of providing sound legal and business advice and counsel to sales professionals, product management, and other internal customers. The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying and analyzing legal issues, drafting and negotiating documents, presenting commercially viable recommendations, and assuring legal compliance. When dealing with internal or external customers, the successful candidate will seek to enhance the customer experience and simplify the customer’s interaction with the legal function.
This opportunity is with Thomson Reuters based in either Toronto, Minneapolis Saint Paul, or Dallas. The role sits within the Customers & Commercial team of the Thomson Reuters General Counsel Office, a highly collaborative team focused on enabling business growth and mitigating risk for the customer-centric commercial group. To be successful in this role you should have the experience and capability to handle a broad range of legal and compliance matters.
About the Role
In this opportunity as Senior Legal Counsel, you will:
- Review, draft, and negotiate a wide range of customer facing and partner agreements, primarily complex software (including SaaS) and information licensing agreements, re-distribution, reseller, referral, hosting, content acquisition, consulting and professional services agreements, non-disclosure agreements and other commercial agreements relating to sales of Thomson Reuters products and services.
- Work within the Customers & Commercial team to identify legal, regulatory and compliance requirements and risks associated with various business initiatives and developing and implementing appropriate mitigation strategies.
- Operate within policy guidelines and requirements set for Thomson Reuters lawyers to ensure compliance and consistency.
- Research and respond to general legal inquiries from Thomson Reuters internal customers that relate to corporate, commercial, intellectual property and compliance matters, including privacy-related matters, and advise business on appropriate legal action to be taken.
- Contribute know-how to the group’s Knowledge Management initiatives and help to build an open knowledge sharing culture.
- Provide practical and insightful business and strategic advice, leveraging experience in the practice of law and the legal profession.
- Undertake other reasonable duties as requested.
About You
You’re a fit for the role of Senior Legal Counsel if your background includes:
- 5-7+ years post qualification experience in private practice and/or as in-house legal counsel advising on the sell rather than the buy side.
- Experience with commercial contracting in a sales organization and a desire to build a legal career within a large corporate setting.
- Excellent technical legal knowledge in contract and commercial law, particularly with SaaS products and solutions, including Gen AI products and solutions.
- Excellent negotiation and drafting skills.
- Excellent written/verbal communication skills. Ability to positively influence behavior of multiple stakeholders.
- Ability to think strategically and creatively, to identify and resolve legal issues.
- Experience and interest in providing strategic legal advice to business leaders and partnering with multiple stakeholders to drive strategy and growth.
- Excellent communication, organization, and analytical skills, and an aptitude for problem-solving.
- Experience and/or interest in using AI tools and other legal technology.
- Ability to successfully work in a team environment and in a matrixed organization and build rapport and trust with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Authorized to practice law.

In the United States, Thomson Reuters offers a comprehensive benefits package to our employees. The base compensation range for this role is $114,400 - $212,400 depending on location. This role may also be eligible for an Annual Bonus based on performance.
