The Senior Financial Analyst, under the direction of the Controller, is primarily responsible for performing Financial Reporting, Planning, and Analysis. The core tasks include building, maintaining, and tracking departmental budgets, developing, interpreting and implementing complex financial models and accounting concepts or techniques for financial planning and control. Additional responsibilities will include conducting studies to analyze complex financial actions and prepare recommendations for policy, procedure, control or action, analysis of financial information to determine present and future financial performance, identification of trends and recommendations for improvements, evaluate complex profit plans, operating records and financial statements, conduct research and prepare economic reports on subjects such as rate of return, depreciation, working capital requirements, and subsidiary investment performance.
What does the Senior Financial Analyst do?
- Prepare and update flexible financial forecasts and trend analyses based on future and prospective initiatives, changing trends in the insurance market, and other business dynamics, incorporating impacts on debt covenants and cash flows.
- Develop, present, and track departmental budgets.
- Collaborate with the departmental leaders to review and assess proposed initiatives.
- Prepare Management Discussion & Analysis reports discussing financial performance versus budget, including variance analysis and other commentary.
- Consolidate quarterly reporting packages and prepare banking covenants.
- Monitor investment performance and portfolio companies’ profitability metrics, debt covenants and leverage ratios.
- Perform preliminary assessments, financial modelling, valuation analysis, risk analysis, and due diligence for potential investments.
- Create business cases to support decision-making.
- Continue to improve the measurement and reporting of KPI’s.
- Prepare and update cash flow projections and provide recommendations based on results.
- Provide advice and guidance to the Controller, VP of Finance & Administration, and all internal departments as necessary.
- Set priorities, meet deadlines, and manage demands individually.
- Perform all other job-related tasks or special projects as directed.
Does this sound like you?
- Financial Analysis and Reporting: Proven experience in analyzing and reporting on financial data, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting principles and practices (including GAAP & ASPE), financial markets, and banking regulations.
- Strategic Planning and Forecasting: Experience with financial forecasts and trend analyses, relating to the current business products, future and prospective initiatives, and changing trends.
- Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrated experience in providing advice and guidance to senior management & executives.
- Leadership and Team Development: Experience in training and mentoring junior Finance & Accounting team members.
- Technological Proficiency: Ability to utilize software tools to create and manage spreadsheets, reports, documents, databases, filing systems, calendars etc.
- Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: Skilled in selecting appropriate mathematical methods or formulas to solve complex problems. As well as the ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions, including finding relationships among seemingly unrelated events.
- Time Management and Prioritization: Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and manage individual demands effectively.
Qualifications
- A Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business Administration or Accounting.
- 5+ years of experience in finance or accounting.
- 2+ years of experience in a financial analyst role.
- Experience working in the Insurance Industry is an asset.
- Previous experience strongly desired in Financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting and financial analysis.
- MBA with a concentration in Finance is an asset.
- Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) or Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is an asset.
- Excellent knowledge of Excel and MS Office applications (Word, Access, PowerPoint).
