Job description

The Senior Finance Officer is responsible for providing a range of accounting and bookkeeping functions to the Tlicho Investment Corporation (TIC) and its subsidiaries, to ensure effective, efficient, and accurate processing of financial, accounts payable, and accounts receivable transactions.

Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Senior Finance Officer is responsible for providing financial, administrative, and data processing services. This position helps to ensure that the company is providing effective and efficient services to maintain accurate and up-to-date finances, to guarantee that vendors and suppliers are paid within established limits, and to ensure that accounts receivable transactions are performed in a timely manner.

Responsibilities

General accounts payable functions including:

  • Review bills for appropriate documentation and approval, including matching bills to purchase orders, prior to entering data into the accounting system.
  • Accurate entry of accounts payable data into the accounting system.
  • Process cheque runs in accordance with company policy. Prepare vendor cheques for mail distribution.
  • Audit, reconcile and process credit card statements.
  • Reconcile vendor statements, research and follow-up on and correct all discrepancies. Correspond with vendors and respond to inquiries.
  • Maintain vendor files and monitor accounts to ensure payments are up to date.

General accounts receivable functions including:

  • Assist with timely completion of customer invoices in compliance with any project operating agreement.
  • Code, post and receipt payments from customers.
  • Prepare and coordinate deposit activities.
  • Assist with collection of overdue accounts including issuing monthly statements. Determine payment plans with customer (if approved).
  • Reconcile customers’ statements, research and follow-up on and correct all discrepancies. Correspond with customers and respond to inquiries.
  • Perform account, bank, and other reconciliations.

Other finance and payroll support functions including:

  • Full-cycle accounting, including performing month end reporting procedures;
  • Processing full-cycle payroll including follow-up and year-end payroll requirements (garnishments, payroll tax, T4 preparation, CRA remittances, WSCC, etc.);
  • Other financial data entry as required;
  • Maintain complete electronic filing system to support financial records;
  • Perform general administrative tasks;
  • Handle and complete special projects as they arise;
  • Reviewing bank statements and performing credit card reconciliation;
  • Reconciling and maintaining customer accounts between Accounting System and Operation System;
  • Managing the monthly financial statement meeting with management, and conducting variance analysis;
  • Assisting with various audits (include Year-End Audit starting May) and other ad-hoc reporting tasks.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of accounts payable, accounts receivable and sound bookkeeping skills;
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member with minimal supervision;
  • Strong administrative, time management and organizational skills;
  • MS office proficiency including computerized accounting;
  • Experience working with QuickBooks and Excel;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work both in a team, and independently;
  • Ability to maintain high level of accuracy and attention to detail;
  • Ability to continuously meet deadlines;
  • Experience working in a multi-cultural, diverse environment demonstrating cultural awareness and sensitivity;
  • Ability to speak the Tlicho language an asset.

Typically, the above would be attained by:

Intermediate level CPA student (PEP level) or above, coupled with a minimum of 3 years related financial/accounting experience (full cycle accounting) and 1-year payroll experience. Experience in construction/project management accounting and real estate/property management accounting considered strong assets.
