Senior Finance Director

This is an exciting high-profile appointment that will appeal to a dynamic individual who is on the fast track to executive leadership who wants to make a difference at a dynamic, fast-growing private company.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Senior Director of Finance works with the CFO to develop, communicate and execute financial strategy in support of the overall business plan and strategic direction of the Company. Responsibilities span financial reporting, treasury management, corporate finance, insurance and other risk management, IT, and strategic planning.

Key Responsibilities

Initial responsibilities include strategic leadership in the areas of financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting. A key responsibility is the facilitation of cross training amongst Finance department staff in these areas.

The Senior Director of Finance advises on the company's investments and capital structure and works with the CFO, executive and senior leadership teams, and Board of Directors to ensure appropriate investment of financial resources to enhance profitability and drive growth.

The Senior Director of Finance also provides leadership to the company's IT team, ensuring the team can deliver high service levels, successfully complete critical hardware and software projects, and manage cybersecurity risks.

Indicators of Success (Key Performance Indicators)

Financial reporting

  • Learns and understands all aspects of the Company's financial reporting systems, and then leads cross training initiatives within the Finance department in all related aspects.
  • Manages monthly and annual reporting, including preparation of financial statements, special reports, and regulatory filings.
  • Monitors financial performance by measuring and analyzing results, initiating corrective actions, and minimizing the impact of variances.
  • Prepares and communicates budgets, forecasts and projections.
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement, cost reduction, and systems enhancement, and accumulating capital to fund expansion.
  • Acts on audit, evaluation, and other objective financial-performance information.

Strategic Planning

  • Support the CFO in developing and implementing sound financial planning, management, control and reporting and ensuring financial asset strategies are in alignment with the Company's goals and objectives.
  • Support the CFO in providing guidance to management and the Board of Directors in the areas of financial management, planning, reporting, and analysis.
  • Provide strategic oversight of the Accounting and Finance functions and direct the development of policies, procedures, and internal controls.

Policy Development

  • Recommend financial policies and guidelines and internal controls for Finance, Accounting and Treasury functions.

Leadership and Guidance

  • Provide advice to the CFO and other management on financial matters.
  • Direct, guide and mentor Finance team members.

Governance and Compliance

  • Ensure that all finance and related practices comply with local, provincial and federal standards and regulations.
  • Provide oversight, advice and direction with respect to short- and long-term projects and capital management.

Risk Management

  • Oversee aviation valuation and insurance program requirements and participate in insurance administration.
  • Promote risk mitigation strategies under span of control.

Information Technology and Systems

  • Develop systems development strategy.
  • Ensure availability of resources for successful and timely execution of strategic systems development projects.
  • Ensure high service levels for internal and external IT users.
  • Recommend to the CFO financial software systems to streamline processes and improve efficiency.
  • Ensure that financial software systems can accurately sustain requirements as set out under employment and accounting legislation and as required by the Finance department.
  • Manage cybersecurity program and other IT risk mitigation policies.

Treasury

  • Develop financial strategies by forecasting capital requirements; identifying monetary resources; and developing action plans.
  • Maximize return on invested funds by identifying investment opportunities and maintaining relationships with the banking community.
  • Assist in overseeing and/or managing relationships with critical stakeholders and business partners including, but not limited to, independent auditors, investors and investment and banking institutions.
  • Recommend to the CFO investment strategies that consider cash and liquidity needs.
  • Provide advice and direction with respect to short- and long-term projects and capital management.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds.
  • Frequent travel by ground/air within and outside the province.

Qualifications

Typically, this position requires an undergraduate degree in Finance, Accounting or related field, and/or an MBA. The incumbent must hold the Canadian Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), or equivalent certification that is acceptable by Canadian licensing entities. Previous experience in public accounting is considered to be an asset. A combination of education and experience may be considered. Preference will be given to qualified Indigenous applicants.

The incumbent will demonstrate knowledge of Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE) and Generally Accepted Accounting principles (GAAP) and any other financial reporting vehicles prescribed by legislation.

A minimum of ten (10) years' financial and/or accounting experience is required with at least five (5) more years of progressively senior financial management experience.
