The Copper Mountain mine currently produces approximately 100 million pounds of copper equivalent per year. With a future mill expansion and the integration of New Ingerbelle, the Copper Mountain Mine is expected to produce approximately 140 million pounds of copper equivalent per year over the first 20 years of its 32-year mine life based on reserves. The Opportunity

Hudbay Minerals Inc. is seeking a Senior Environmental Scientist at our Copper Mountain Mine in Princeton, BC. This position is a 5x2, Monday to Friday, day shift schedule.

Position

Senior Environmental Scientist
Location: Copper Mountain Mine, located near the town of Princeton, British Columbia at the center of the scenic Similkameen Valley. Princeton is a community-oriented town with a diverse offering of activities, especially for those who love the outdoors. Princeton is also in close proximity to both the city of Vancouver and the Okanagan.

Summary

Reporting to the Environment Manager, the Senior Environmental Scientist is responsible for environmental project management and supporting environmental awareness across the site.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Participate in all Company Environment and Health & Safety programs.
  2. Provide oversight and coordination of Water management projects – Water treatment (passive and active), groundwater well installation, design and installation flow monitoring systems, etc.
  3. Reclamation – planning, monitoring, and implementation.
  4. NPRI, GHG Reporting and support for verifications.
  5. Liaise with Communities of Interest as a technical expert where applicable.
  6. Work to advance the use of technology in supporting compliance and monitoring.
  7. Developing and maintaining department Standard Operating Plans.
  8. Support the move to ISO 14001 compliance as necessary.
  9. Develop, update, and implement environmental management plans and monitor compliance with the plans and any projects related to the plans.
  10. Investigate non-compliances and write reports as required.
  11. Develop waste and recycling management program.
  12. Support the achievement of TSM protocols.
  13. Perform any other responsibilities related to the Senior Environmental Scientist role as required or as assigned by the department head.

Education & Experience

  1. B.Sc., B.A.Sc, or B.Eng. in Environmental, Biological or Earth Sciences or other relevant science or engineering degree.
  2. Registered professional or eligible for registration.
  3. Minimum 5 years of related work experience in the mining industry.
  4. Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office suite and Google.
  5. Previous experience in a leadership role is an asset.
  6. Project Management experience.
  7. Mine reclamation experience considered an asset.
  8. Mines Supervisor Certification (and experience) is an asset.
  9. Possess a valid driver’s license and have access to personal transportation.

Required Skills

  1. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  2. High regard for personal safety and the safety of company property and other employees.
  3. Understand regulatory compliance requirements.
  4. Ability to prepare documentation as well as regulatory and internal reports.
  5. Good understanding of the Environmental Assessment process in BC and experience in preparing regulatory submissions and presenting stakeholder information.
  6. Skill in working in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment, and able to adapt to shifting priorities.
  7. Motivated self-starter with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously under tight deadlines.
  8. Required to meet pre-employment testing requirements.

Working Conditions

Work consists of a team environment with regularly scheduled and ad-hoc meetings. Frequent exposure to sitting at a computer doing work online. Role may operate in a potentially stressful environment caused by constant requests from several people causing uncertainty and ambiguity. Work may require the employee to be physically capable of working outside on difficult terrain and in all weather conditions.

Salary Range
