As a Senior Environmental Compliance Specialist, you will join our Guelph or Oakville, Ontario office (hybrid) as part of our Alternative Delivery team.
The successful applicant will be a key contributor to Matrix’s growing portfolio of environmental services for large infrastructure projects through both project business development and project execution. In this dynamic role, the Senior Environmental Compliance Specialist will be collaborating with internal and external subject matter experts to successfully meet the growing needs for environmental compliance on transformative projects across the province:
Project Execution
Lead and manage environmental requirements on infrastructure projects across Ontario
Oversee and provide leadership and input on environmental assessment, planning, design, and construction projects
Coordinate with internal project team across disciplines, including engineers, scientists, and technicians. Collaborate with private and public sector clients, regulatory and approval agencies, sub-consultants, and subcontractors.
Actively engage and provide regular check ins with project managers and discipline leads to resolve internal and external challenges
Engaging and liaising with stakeholders, including conservation authorities, municipal, provincial and federal governments and the public
Mentor and develop junior and intermediate staff members
Business Development
Leverage existing client relationships and cultivate new relationships to generate business development opportunities
Develop strong client relationships within the infrastructure sector in Ontario and across Canada
Lead and prepare competitive proposals and cost estimates for multi-disciplinary projects
What We Are Looking For
15+ years of construction, planning or experience in a consulting or directly related role managing environmental compliance
A bachelor’s or master’s degree in environmental planning, urban planning, geography, environmental science, or a related field
Experience with groundwater and surface water management, sustainability, noise and vibration, air quality and species at risk permitting process
Ability to work on a variety of projects in various sectors (e.g., infrastructure, oil and gas, power, pipelines, mining).
Business development experience backed by a superior track record of building productive client relationships.
Experience working with transportation and municipal infrastructure planning and construction projects
Experience engaging with stakeholders including First Nations, municipal governments, conservation authorities and the private sector
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Strong project management skills, including developing and monitoring of budgets, approved project scope and schedule, organizational skills, staff supervision and team communications.
Knowledge and working experience with regulatory requirements such as Municipal Class EA process and the Canadian Impact Assessment Act
Experience leading or supporting large proposals or bids
Valid G class driver’s license is required.
The following would be considered an asset:
Knowledge or technical working experience with Ontario Regulation 153/04 and 406/19
Experience working directly for a construction firm or consortium on alternative delivery (e.g., P3, DB) projects
Experience working with Metrolinx and the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO)
Familiarity or working knowledge of ISO 140001
