Reporting to the Manager, Engineering, the Senior Engineer, Mechanical & Piping is responsible for managing timely and fit-for-purpose discipline-specific engineering services to projects and programs by planning and mobilizing best value technical capability, while leading a small team of Mechanical and Piping Engineers. This position is expected to lead and provide strategies for the mechanical and piping disciplines and subsequently how it functions within KSPC Projects, Maintenance, and Production teams. The Senior Engineer, Mechanical & Piping supports FEL design and detailed design on equipment, mechanical and piping technical issues, complete design of capital projects, coordinate interfaces between internal technical interfaces and external technical bodies. The Senior Engineer, Mechanical & Piping will be responsible for driving forward sound and standardized design, construction, and maintenance practices of mechanical assets. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Engineering & Design Strategy - 30%
Undertake engineering services delivery model options analysis.
Implement engineering knowledge management practices in alignment with the strategy.
Implement value engineering/improvement practices in alignment with strategy.
Review and/or develop mechanical engineering drawings and documents in line with requirements relating to feasibility, standards, codes, and KSPC’s quality specifications. Work closely together with engineering & execution consultants, design partners and others.
Evaluate new and existing technologies for their applicability to KSPC.
Provide overall mechanical engineering discipline leadership with respect to specification development, plant standardization, correction of systemic technical issues and key decision making.
Lead the mechanical engineering discipline within the Projects group ensuring suitable technical support is provided to stakeholders.
- Engineering & Design (incl. FEL, FEED) Planning, Optimization and Oversight - 30%
Deliver efficient and effective engineering services considering all aspects of constructability, operability, and maintenance.
Gather the discipline-specific technical requirements from Operations stakeholders.
Define, quantify, and create scope definition for the discipline-specific engineering deliverables of each project.
Oversee all engineering work within their discipline.
Enable selection of the best engineering alternatives for work within the set specifications, standards, and regulatory requirements.
Support evaluation of business cases, particularly technical and design aspects.
Support engineering-related requests for information.
Implement the engineering quality plan for their discipline.
Oversee technical inputs into pre-commissioning, commissioning, and handover plans.
Review outcomes from quality control (QC) performed by Ops project engineering to confirm desired outcomes of Projects Department builds/installs.
- Vendor & Contractor Management - 10%
Support coordination of work with engineering & project execution consultants, design partners and other contractors.
- Mechanical & Piping Team Leadership - 30%
Lead the engineering team responsible for mechanical & piping on Projects.
Develop and retain people with the right skills and capabilities to effectively deliver engineering services.
Ensure team has required knowledge, training, and alignment to successfully implement the specifications, standards and applicable regulations related to their discipline.
Administrate KSPC’s employee performance management program for direct reports.
Contract Employee and Secondee Management.
Coordination of tasks for direct reports; accountable for task completion.
Enforcement of stage gate control procedures, documents, workflows, work instructions.
Liaise with Procurement, Project Management, Maintenance, and Production teams.
Continuous improvement initiatives for Mechanical and Piping disciplines.
Communicate project status and progress.
Ensures that K+S Potash Canada is at all times in compliance with Safety, Health and Environmental regulatory and internal laws and policies.
Sets a high personal safety standard for themselves, direct reports, and fellow colleagues.
Ensure all regulatory requirements are met for projects.

- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
- Minimum 10 years experience in a heavy industrial setting, potash experience preferred.
- Minimum 5 years experience project management experience on large multi-year projects.
- Strong team leadership skills including demonstrated facilitation skills.
- P. Eng designation required.
- Proven ability to lead the engineering discipline and manage team of engineers to meet standards and quality requirements.
- Demonstrated proficiency in fostering business-focused collaboration, aligning cross-functional teams and driving projects to successful completion.
