What you’ll do

  1. BC Hydro is looking for an experienced Electrical Site Engineer to work on our construction projects and ensure that construction and commissioning are done right. If you are a self-starter who enjoys working in the field on large and complex construction projects and on new BC Hydro stations, then we invite you to join the Site Engineering team.
  2. At the heart of the construction and commissioning, you will use your technical expertise in electrical equipment, protection and control (P&C) design, construction and testing to address complex technical queries and problems by connecting design engineers and contractors to keep construction and commissioning on track.
  3. Develop and oversee all technical aspects of field engineering for construction and commissioning of new electrical and P&C equipment, including switchgear, reactive equipment installation, electrical equipment protection, generator/turbine control and monitoring, communication networks, water conveyance and spillway control systems, and instrumentation systems.
  4. Provide construction oversight on major projects, working with contractors to ensure proper coordination and staging of construction and commissioning activities, reviewing constructability, and developing plans, schedules, procedures, and construction/commissioning methods to assure conformance.
  5. Perform first-level quality assurance to confirm that the execution of work is in accordance with plans, specifications, drawings, and industry standards.
  6. Ensure that tests and inspections are performed, witnessed, and documented in accordance with approved procedures and contract requirements, conducting field reviews as POR’s delegate and coordinating witness and hold points for critical components.
  7. Maintain strong relationships and liaise with different discipline design engineering staff to conduct field reviews and organize timely resolution of technical issues.
  8. Collaborate with Construction Management to eliminate any hazards associated with the work that may adversely affect the environment or the safety or health of employees.
  9. Organize the accumulation of assigned discipline technical information (redlined construction drawings, RFIs, non-conformance reports) and synthesize this into the construction report.
  10. Develop commissioning plans to systematically bring electrical systems online and prove their function.
  11. Encourage the professional development of engineers and technical staff by coaching, mentoring, and providing instruction, advice, and technical guidance.

What you bring

  1. Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering recognized by Canadian Universities.
  2. Eight years’ experience in engineering related to electrical construction, testing, and commissioning, preferably with a background in high voltage equipment or protection and controls in a utility environment.
  3. Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in the Province of British Columbia.
  4. Demonstrated technical writing and presentation skills, excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  5. Demonstrated ongoing professional development such as self-study, attendance at technical and administrative courses, and participation in technical and professional societies.
  6. Demonstrated team player that is approachable, takes initiative, and is a proven problem solver.
  7. Ability to analyze and resolve challenging engineering problems with considerable independence and understand the implications of costs, constructability, operability, and safety.
  8. Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of substation and generating station design, construction, and testing, and practical experience with:
  • Commissioning and testing experience with high voltage equipment.
  • Electrical utility generation protection systems such as automated unit control schemes, digital relays and PLC programming, electrical and non-electrical protection, governor and exciter control systems, water flow and spillway control systems, air gap and unit vibration monitoring, shear pin monitoring, spill gate controls, reservoir level monitoring, penstock protection, unit auxiliary controls, control room design, etc.
  • MRS compliance including NERC-PRC, CIP and MOD Standards.
  • BC Hydro Engineering, Construction, Maintenance Practices.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License.

    What else you should know

    1. This posting is a Full Time Regular Position.
    2. Significant time in the field, at various construction locations, is a requirement of this role.
    3. HQ will be in Campbell River; other locations on Vancouver Island may be considered, details to be discussed in the recruitment process.
    4. Applicants who do not meet the full qualifications or those with lesser work experience may be considered for a lower-level position.
    5. Note that the following must be maintained in good standing as a condition of continuous employment:
    • P.Eng.: Professional Engineer = In Good Standing
    • Driver's License Type = Class 5
