The Senior Director is responsible for ensuring that the journalism produced by CBC News adheres to the highest standards outlined in CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices. This role involves managing the relationship with the Ombudsman’s office and organizing responses to public complaints.

The Senior Director leads the JSP office team and collaborates with the senior leadership team to manage the evolution of CBC’s journalistic standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Be the guardian of CBC’s journalistic principles, advising journalists on proper standards.
  • Lead the JSP team to advise CBC News leaders on journalistic standards and manage escalations.
  • Manage the relationship with the Ombudsman’s office.
  • Work with senior leaders on conflict and ethical issues.
  • Oversee the management and evolution of the CBC Language Guide.
  • Guide the evolution of standards through equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Conduct internal and external reviews about journalism concerns.
  • Direct the strategy around education related to journalistic policies.
  • Report directly to the General Manager and Editor-in-Chief.
  • Initiate conversations regarding CBC journalism across communities.
  • Manage and coordinate internal advisory committees.
  • Advise on best practices for public trust in CBC journalism.
  • Act as a trainer and educator when appropriate.
  • Some writing for public consumption is required.
  • This role will be based in Toronto.
  • Travel expectations: 10 to 15%.
