This is a hybrid work position in Calgary, Alberta, and requires in-person collaboration at the WestJet Campus (22 Aerial Place NE) 3 days per week. This provides flexibility for the remaining 40% of the work week. This hybrid work plan allows for critically important learning, collaboration, and networking with our colleagues. Specific days in the office are agreed upon by the team.

Overview of role:

You will provide technical expertise in front-end development and help the development team create high-quality software solutions by designing and developing browser-based web applications. You will engage with the development team and business stakeholders to develop guest-focused applications that meet WestJet’s business, technical, and quality requirements. Act as a coach and mentor to other developers and provide meaningful comments in pull requests. This position requires an energetic self-starter with a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and contribute to a fast-paced environment. Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with others are essential.

Key responsibilities include:

• Provide technical expertise for WestJet’s product features and environments.
• Participate in the creation, implementation, and ongoing evolution of WestJet’s design and development methodologies, coding standards, and style guidelines.
• Evaluate and select new software development tools and frameworks.
• Share technical expertise through workshops, presentations, and training for team skill and knowledge development.
• Provide technical expertise and coaching to developers and external consultants.
• Plan, lead, and track the technical aspects of software development sustainment streams and capital projects.
• Work with business stakeholders to define and prepare functional and design specifications of new features/products.
• Provide accurate estimates for development effort, complexity, and risk for software development sustainment streams and capital projects.
• Design and develop automated unit and integration tests for front-end code that validate feature/product requirements.
• Develop robust, extensible, high-quality code that meets business, technical, and quality requirements.
• Collaborate with quality assurance partners to assess the impact of code changes, ensuring validation of requirements and providing timely troubleshooting and fixes to software defects.
• Work with operational partners to ensure supportability of new features/products and provide timely technical support and fixes to production applications.
• Provide technical expertise and approval for code reviews and analysis of front-end code as well as all automated tests.
• Manage code and resolve conflicts with other development initiatives.
• Document system components, related interfaces, and ensure complete and accurate release notes.

Experience and qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
• 6 or more years of professional experience in all phases of software development.
• 5 years of experience with Vue.js.
• Experience with TypeScript.
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
• Excellent planning and organizational skills.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Expertise in web development using CSS, HTML, and JavaScript.
• Expertise in JavaScript libraries such as VueJS, React, Angular, and NodeJS.
• Expertise in mobile web development and responsive web design.
• Expertise in web usability (UI/UX design).
• Expertise in JavaScript testing frameworks such as Jest, Mocha, Jasmine.
• Expertise in version control systems such as Git.
• Expertise in code coverage tools such as Cobertura and Clover.
• Expertise in RESTful web services using AJAX, JSON.
• Expertise in object-oriented software design, design patterns, security awareness, and development best practices.
• Expertise in DevOps and agile development methods such as Lean, Scrum, Kanban.
• Expertise in development on Windows, Linux, and/or MacOS.
• Expertise in IDE software such as Visual Studio Code.
• Expertise in build automation tools such as Azure DevOps Pipelines.
