Description
Our client, a non-profit organization, is seeking a Senior Database Administrator on a part-time, contract employment basis for 3 months with the possibility of extension. This role will span both operational and project-based initiatives, such as building out an Enterprise data warehouse with Snowflake. This role does have an on-site component, twice a month in Toronto, Ontario. The successful Senior Database Administrator candidate will have strong experience with SQL Server, Snowflake and Power BI, while having excellent communication skills.
Responsibilities:
- Define and implement system architectures, policies and procedures to ensure the integrity, availability and security of application and database systems.
- Plan and coordinate data migrations between systems and/or platforms.
- Research and promote updates and patches as required, to take advantage of latest technology.
- Act as technical lead in defining the solution architecture of new application and database server systems, including software and hardware specifications.
- Participate in and support capacity planning and the development of long-term strategic goals for systems and software in conjunction with end-users and department managers.
- Coordinate and collaborate with multiple business units to ensure availability, reliability, and scalability of corporate databases to meet business demands.
- Develop, implement and maintain policies, procedures and associated training plans for network resource administration, appropriate use, disaster recovery and data archiving.
Acquisition & Deployment:
- Conduct research on database products, tools, application server/network hardware, software, and protocols in support of procurement and development efforts.
Operational Management:
- Set up new application and database servers, configure and manage application servers.
- Assess, patch and upgrade servers to ensure compliance and security of information systems.
- Deploy web application releases in the production environment following change management policies and procedures.
- Proactively monitor production servers’ health and resources to prevent performance problems. Respond to and resolve server issues.
- Implement and maximize efficiencies and take advantage of tuning opportunities.
- Develop and deploy end-user practices and tools for data extraction, transformation, load in accordance with IT processes.
- Design and develop scripts or orchestrations for integration purposes.
- Perform server and security audits.
- Perform system backups and recovery tests, monitor jobs execution and address any issues.
- Develop and maintain documentation materials.
- Provide guidance to junior members of the team.
Working Conditions:
- Occasional evening and weekend work to meet deadlines.
- On-call shifts on an alternating schedule including weekdays after business hours, weekends, and statutory holidays may be required.
- Some travel may be required throughout the territory.
Requirements:
- College diploma or university degree in the field of computer science.
- Certifications in ITIL Foundations is required.
- 7-10 years of experience in designing, building, installing, configuring and supporting MS SQL Server 2012+ production databases within a Windows environment and with IIS and .NET framework.
- Experience working with Snowflake.
- Experience working in an enterprise scale application and database environment.
- Experience working with Azure DevOps for managing repositories and deployment automation.
- Experience with Power BI and/or Tableau, nice to have.
- Strong conceptual understanding of database structures, modeling, principles, and practices.
- Experience with T-SQL, PowerShell and/or similar scripting languages.
- In-depth experience with data management governance.
- Broad knowledge of data reporting, querying tools and practices.
- Hands-on database tuning and troubleshooting experience.
- Advanced knowledge of the following: Windows Server 2008/2012/2016/2019, Azure, SQL, IIS.
- Microsoft Certified Server Administration and/or DBA certification is an asset.
- Experience with server performance tuning and monitoring tools.
- Strong ability to prepare written reports and present information in a clear manner both written and orally.
- Legally eligible to work in Canada.
