Senior Claims Examiner

CURIE (Canadian Universities Reciprocal Insurance Exchange) located in Burlington, Ontario delivers cost effective, and solutions based, property and liability insurance and risk management services to its members – Canadian post-secondary institutions in 9 provinces across the country.

CURIE is excited to announce we are seeking a full-time Senior Claims Examiner to join our team on a permanent basis. The ideal candidate is well organized, pays attention to detail, is process oriented and a self-starter. As Senior Claims Examiner, you will be responsible for examining liability and property claims within a commercial property and casualty insurance program. This position directly reports to the Vice President, Claims.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Examine Liability and Property Claims, which include bodily injury and property damage losses. Losses may include occupiers’ liability, medical malpractice, sports injuries, veterinarian malpractice, educational malpractice, fiduciary liability, benefits malpractice, defamation, host liquor liability and various property issues.
  • Review new claims intakes and statements of claim to determine applicable coverage.
  • Confirm the nature and validity of new claims, including the determination of potential exposures and assigning appropriate independent adjusters or legal counsel.
  • Direct and monitor independent adjusters and legal counsel on investigation of files.
  • Evaluate the nature of the loss and determine appropriate coverage.
  • Ensure file is reserved accurately.
  • Examine and assess the scope of liability and damages.
  • Review payment requests thoroughly and process payments.
  • Attend mediations and pre-trials on claim files when required.
  • Handle deductible recovery claims (liability claims) and subrogation on property claims.
  • Maintain file reserves in claims handling system.
  • Assist vice-president claims on quarterly claims board reports.
  • Assist with monthly reconciliation report balance with between claims and accounting systems.
  • Assist in organizing and running regional workshops, risk conferences claims topics, and webinars.
  • Assist in CURIE Quarterly Newsletter.
  • Adhere to CURIE’s Claims Procedure and Handling Manual and protocols.
  • Participate in claims large loss meetings with underwriting, loss control and subscriber (insured).
  • Assist auditors on claims related requests.
  • Participate in quarterly meeting with loss control, underwriting, risk management to discuss trends the claims department is seeing on the overall portfolio.
  • Assist staff and undertake any special projects, as required.

Education and Experience:

· Post-secondary University or College degree/diploma required.

· Minimum of 7-15 years of commercial liability and property claims adjusting and/or commercial liability and property examiner experience.

· CIP, FCIP, CRM or RF designation or working towards any, will be a significant asset.

Requirements:

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel & PowerPoint.
  • Experience using claims management software to fully manage claims through its life cycle.
  • Demonstrate the ability to acquire new skills and respond rapidly to ongoing change and development in this area.
  • Working knowledge of contemporary office policies, practices, and protocols.
  • Ability to respond to diverse and competing demands and deadlines; work in an unsupervised, self-motivated and well-organized manner.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills appropriate to diverse constituency of internal and external contacts.
  • Willingness and capacity to respond to new challenges and opportunities.
