The Opportunity:
The Senior Specialist is instrumental in developing, managing, and improving the entire data analytics lifecycle, from data collection, transformation to visualization and automation as well as robust practices and standards that enable effective, data-informed decision making. This role will work closely with Subject Matter Experts across multiple business teams to understand business requirements and develop data models and visualizations tools in support of Parkland’s retail and commercial business.
Responsibilities:
- Develop sophisticated fraud prevention tools and processes focused on the protection of people, environment, and financials. Financials represent fleet and cardlock, loyalty, gift cards, site-level fraud, and car wash.
- Lead vendor engagement (e.g., SAS, I3) on innovation / AI solutions to further support fraud detection and prevention.
- Manage data integration for Security & Loss Prevention (“SLP”) case investigation software, ThinkLP – Salesforce.
- Spearhead the data requirements to enable the migration of card portfolios amidst the consolidation of fleet and cardlock programs.
- Perform volume, revenue, and margin analysis to optimize the performance of payment programs, mitigate losses, and support the fleet strategy deployment across Parkland’s Canadian business.
This position supports the drive towards performance optimization, loss prevention, and a proactive approach towards safe and profitable operations. A big emphasis will be placed on shifting focus from reaction to prevention through process / tool development and establishing analytical horsepower within the team. This role is also subject to supporting other duties as required.
Security & Loss Prevention
- Fraud Prevention, Process Implementation and Automation
- Responsible for developing, implementing, communicating, and improving standards and best practices to detect fraud at the retail and cardlock operations-level as well as digitally for areas posing financial risk to Parkland.
- Identify key performance indicators (KPIs) and develop performance measurement frameworks to monitor e.g., drive-off analytics in non-prepay jurisdictions. Work with business stakeholders in Operations and Finance to develop reporting that provides direction on where to focus efforts to reduce financial loss.
- Work with the SLP analysts and investigators on a strategy to evolve and tweak reporting / tools to hone in on fraudulent behavior. This will be an ever-evolving, iterative process as fraudsters adapt to different approaches.
- Improve management of existing data, data analysis and visualizations used for detecting and mitigating fraud.
Data Integration
- Oversee integration of multiple data sources and maintenance of data for the ThinkLP case management system.
- Navigate data across the Parkland application landscape to source the required data for fraud reporting in Power BI or Tableau.
Proprietary Payment Programs
Gift Cards, Retail Proprietary Fleet, Cardlock
Card Portfolio Consolidation
- Analyze and manipulate large sets of data to drive towards program consolidation through portfolio migrations.
- Lead and work collaboratively with multiple teams to massage and validate data for migration purposes while holding the accountability of data accuracy.
- Transform and synthesize raw data using data visualizations and dashboards to provide regular and ad-hoc strategic reporting and analysis to key stakeholders.
Program Performance Management
- Build stewardship reports spanning retail and commercial payment programs to identify opportunities of reducing financial loss AND where growth opportunities exist.
- Deliver consolidated management reporting to various stakeholders to tell a narrative around the data to highlight insights, synthesize conclusions, and ultimately drive actionable business insights.
Mentorship and Expertise
- Provide training and mentorship to team members, fostering a culture of data-driven decision-making and continuous learning within the organization.
- Support incident management, provide assistance with diagnosis and resolution of data related inquiries and issues.
- Act as liaison for internal contacts related to the data analytics / business intelligence tools and provide Subject Matter Expert knowledge for the SLP Team and Payments Team.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Commerce / Business Administration or a related discipline.
- Proven experience (10+ years) in data analytics, business intelligence (“BI”), or a similar role.
- Strong expertise in all aspects of the data analytics lifecycle including data mining & collection, data cleanse and transformation, analysis, and data visualization.
- Expert level proficiency with data analytical tools including but not limited to Power Automate, Power BI, Power Query, SQL, Tableau, Atomic, JIRA, data lakes, POS systems, enterprise resource planning (“ERP”) systems (i.e., JDE, SAP), and the Microsoft Office Suite [Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint, Visio].
- Ability to guide and educate end users on implemented BI solutions as well as support and troubleshoot any business BI related concerns or issues.
- Previous experience in retail and/or commercial fueling operations and Point-of-sale (POS) related experience is a strong asset.
- Ability to effectively tell a story through data and clearly communicate findings for non-technical audiences.
