Your Opportunity

As a Senior Associate, Agriculture Taxation, you will be a key part of our Tax Team, working closely with Managers and Partners to support agricultural clients, including owner-managed farms, cooperatives, and agricultural businesses. Your primary focus will be on preparing and reviewing tax filings, ensuring compliance with federal and provincial tax regulations, and identifying potential tax-saving opportunities for our clients in the agriculture sector.

You are a detail-oriented, proactive professional with a strong understanding of taxation and a passion for working with agricultural businesses. You excel in tax compliance, problem-solving, and technical research, and you enjoy working in a team-based environment where mentorship and collaboration are encouraged.

Your Scope:

  • Prepare and review Canadian personal and corporate tax returns for individuals and businesses in the agriculture sector, ensuring compliance with federal and provincial tax laws.
  • Assist in tax planning strategies for agricultural clients, including succession planning, intergenerational farm transfers, and capital gains exemptions for farmers.
  • Identify tax issues and opportunities related to farm operations, agribusiness structures, and specialized agricultural tax programs.
  • Prepare GST/HST filings and compliance documents specific to the agricultural industry, considering unique factors such as farm loss treatments and input tax credits.
  • Conduct technical tax research to provide support on tax planning opportunities, government programs, and incentives related to farming and agribusiness.
  • Support managers and partners on tax engagements by gathering financial data, analyzing client records, and assisting in preparing recommendations for tax-efficient strategies.
  • Collaborate with the Assurance team to ensure tax compliance for agricultural clients undergoing reviews or audits.
  • Maintain client relationships by responding to tax inquiries, providing clear explanations of tax positions, and ensuring timely communication on deliverables.
  • Assist with the training and mentorship of junior team members by reviewing tax returns, providing feedback, and supporting their development in tax compliance and agricultural taxation.

Your Qualifications:

  • CPA designation, or soon to be designated (successfully wrote the CFE), would be an asset
  • 2-4 years of experience in Canadian tax compliance and preparation within a public practice firm.
  • Experience in agriculture taxation or a strong interest in working with agricultural businesses.
  • Knowledge and experience working in accounting software such as CaseWare, Tax Prep, QuickBooks, and Simply Accounting would be an asset
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Excel would be an asset
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills, capable of multitasking various tasks, projects, and strategic improvement initiatives
