Job description

Reporting to the Vice President, the Senior Accountant will oversee the financial management and reporting functions, including the general ledger, job costing, and equipment cost tracking. This role also involves supervising Payroll, Accounts Payable, and Accounts Receivable to ensure smooth financial operations. This position is designed as a progression role, with the opportunity to transition into a Controller position, providing growth potential for a highly motivated individual looking to advance their career in financial leadership.


Key Responsibilities

  • Accounts Payable & Receivable:
  • Review and approve A/R preliminary invoices for accuracy and timeliness.
  • Review and approve A/P office expenses for payment processing.
  • Payroll Administration:
  • Oversee and approve biweekly payroll processes, ensuring compliance with legislation.
  • Financial Reporting:
  • Prepare and post monthly entries; reconcile trial balance and general ledger accounts.
  • Generate and analyze monthly Income Statements and Balance Sheet reports for management review.
  • Prepare and submit HST and Corporation Tax remittances on a monthly basis.
  • Job Costing & Equipment:
  • Analyze and monitor job performance within the job costing system.
  • Manage and monitor equipment costs to ensure operational efficiency.
  • Cash Flow Management:
  • Monitor cash flow and loan positions to ensure financial stability.
  • Annual Renewals & Compliance:
  • Assist with fleet/liability insurance, group benefits, and license plate renewals.
  • Prepare and submit CVOR registrations and PTO returns.
  • Oversee WSIB and payroll compliance processes.
  • Year-End Procedures:
  • Manage year-end reporting and coordinate with auditors as required.

Key Competencies

  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Experience with accounting software, with preference for Jonas Construction Software.
  • Exceptional time-management and multi-tasking skills, ensuring accuracy under tight deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining a high degree of confidentiality and discretion.

Education & Experience

  • Post-secondary education in Accounting or Finance.
  • CPA designation (or equivalent) is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of financial experience, ideally within the construction industry.
  • In-depth knowledge of payroll legislation, WSIB, and compliance requirements.
