Job Description
The Scrum Master is responsible for coaching squads to create and deliver quality solutions and services at their optimal pace, including identifying and collaboratively executing on continuous improvement opportunities, while continually reflecting to the squad progress that has been made. The Scrum Master ensures well facilitated ceremonies, stakeholder meetings, vendor relationships and delivery through a combination of reinforcing ceremony structure/intent/efficiency and enabling common understanding and commitment while creatively empowering squad accountability towards action.
Accountabilities
- Leadership & Coaching: Guides and teaches the squad and organization how to use scrum and agile practices and methodologies. Coaches the squad and Centres of Expertise to exemplify First West agile enterprise principles and practices in their day-to-day work, ensuring the theory, practices, rules, and values of agile are being followed. Provides daily agile coaching to the squad and facilitates a transparent and adaptive environment. Ensures daily stand-ups, sprint reviews, retrospectives, backlog refinement, and planning meetings are well facilitated in a way that encourages full engagement of the squad. Establishes an agile mindset within the squad through conversations and coaching related to self-management and cross functionality.
- Servant Leadership & Managing Relationships: Removes barriers to the squad’s success, supporting the Product Owner, and ensures the squad’s delivery of value is highly visible to all stakeholders. Has hands on involvement in the product and backlog planning. Understands business vision and engages beyond process e.g. in solution design, customer feedback and testing. Fosters close cooperation, cross-training, and mutual support across all squad members. Facilitates communication and collaboration inside and outside of the squad. Shields the squad from external interference and ensures the squad is fully functional and productive.
- Managing Impediments: Consistently visualizes all impediments, dependencies, and risks to be able to identify trends and opportunities for continuous improvement and capture and assign accountability for action plans to remove, mitigate or manage impediments, dependencies and risks. Communicate to the product owner, pod lead and organization any blockers that are impacting or may impact a squad’s ability to deliver. Actively manage and remove dependencies on behalf of the squad and captures actions taken in the appropriate PBIs. Proactively reach out to COEs to secure ceremony participation.
- Metrics & Reporting: Keeps track of delivery metrics and progress on key deliverables and objectives to establish squad performance baselines, e.g. velocity, throughput, and cycle time. Reflect delivery performance to the squad and identify areas for improvement. Inform iteration/sprint planning to optimize available capacity for delivery and support quarterly goal commitments through effective estimation.
People/Thought Leadership
- Provides functional/technical guidance or advice to other employees (no direct supervisory responsibilities)
Qualifications
- 2 years College, Trade or Tech School Diploma in IT, Computer Science, or related discipline required
- Bachelor’s Degree in IT, Computer Science, or a related quantitative discipline preferred
- Certified Scrum Master preferred
- 3 years of experience being a Scrum Master or equivalent experience working in an Agile environment required
- 3 years of experience in a leadership or project lead role preferred
Competencies
- Proven ability to promote innovative thinking and self-improvement within the squad
- Proven ability to coach squad on agile practices and adherence to agile methodology to deliver maximum business value on time
- Experience in scheduling and coordinating meetings, identifying risks/dependencies/impediments, and coordinating resources and handling multiple priorities
- Strong communication skills with ability to communicate complex messages and teach new concepts
Skills
- Demonstrated experience coaching and supporting teams in agile adoption
- Proven expertise in agile techniques, including Scrum and Kanban
- Excellent prioritization skills
- Demonstrated track record of working in collaborative environments as a facilitator, coach, and conflict navigator
- Experience in setting, recording, and assessing OKR's (objectives and key results)
Travel
- Overnight travel may be occasionally required, up to 6 times per year
Risk Management
- Displays an understanding of risk and risk ownership by being able to demonstrate adherence to policies and procedures.
