ABOUT THE ROLE
We have an exciting new opportunity to join our Project Delivery & Construction team as a Safety Manager. This position can be located in one of our offices within the USA or Canada, with frequent travel to project site locations. This is a pivotal position within our organization where you'll provide active leadership, support, and guidance to our Project and Construction teams and ensure projects are executed safely and using best industry practices. The Safety Manager will report directly to the Executive Vice President, Projects, Delivery & Construction, and is integral in ensuring proactive, accurate, and timely safe practices and guidance are maintained throughout the project's lifecycle, across a portfolio of large-scale renewable energy construction projects ($100M+).
Your expertise is integral towards a safe and successful project lifecycle, as well as your collaborative work with Lead Developers, Project Managers, and Supply Chain partners to deliver predictable project outcomes and successful project execution.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Accountable to provide leadership and optimal performance, by managing direct reports and contractors capable of producing the agreed deliverables.
- Demonstrated capability to build, engage, lead and motivate cross-functional teams.
- Accountable to ensure all applicable regulatory and compliance requirements are met and for identifying and mitigating risk that could negatively impact the agreed outcomes or business results.
- Accountable to ensure employees and contractors are adequately trained, qualified, and competent in their roles and compliant with mandatory training, which includes developing and administering technical training programs.
- Accountable to provide recommendations based on provincial or state regulations, policies, and procedures for asset plans, mid-range forecast (MRF), annual budget, and other business planning activities.
- Create, foster, and maintain a proactive safety and psychologically safe culture.
- Provide expert advice on safety systems, trends, response actions, and interpretation of health and safety regulations.
- Ensure contractor safety plans are reviewed and acknowledged prior to work commencement.
- Ensure all Safety training meets TransAlta’s requirements and is consistent with provincial and state regulations by keeping current of changes in the acts and regulations.
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOUCertifications- Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or equivalent professional safety designation desirable.
- Degree, diploma, or certificate in Occupational Health and Safety from a recognized Post-secondary Institution, or equivalent combination of experience.
- NCSO and CHSC certification.
- Expertise in developing and implementing Health & Safety Management Systems.
- 3-7 years of progressively responsible experience in occupational health and safety in an industrial facility or industrial construction environment.
Qualifications- Possess a broad knowledge of health and safety regulations.
- Demonstrated understanding of construction, operations, and process safety.
- Experience with contractor safety management and practices.
- Knowledge of what constitutes a strong safety culture and how to sustain and demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement and innovation.
- Demonstrated knowledge in the areas of health and safety management in an industrial and construction environment. Specific knowledge and experience across Gas, Wind, Hydro, Bess, Interconnections, and Substations.
- A customer-centric mentality to support internal customers; ability to build and maintain effective relationships across a diverse set of key stakeholders.
- Demonstrated capability in developing, implementing, managing, and mentoring TransAlta’s safety standards and policies.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate to external sources as required.
Additional- Ability to travel 20-30% of the time to facilities in Canada and the US.
- Must be able to work on location for a duration of weeks during key milestones of the Project.
- Successful completion of pre-employment testing is a condition of employment.
