Hybrid Work:
This is a hybrid work position in Calgary, Alberta and requires in-person collaboration at the WestJet Campus (22 Aerial Place NE) 3 days per week. This provides flexibility the remaining 40% of the work week. Specific days in the office are agreed upon by the team.
The Safety team is looking for a dedicated team player with excellent technical knowledge and experience to join our ranks as a Safety Investigator. Safety Investigators are responsible for investigating safety files for all operational groups including Flight Operations, Airports, Inflight, and Technical Operations as assigned.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducts accident/incident investigations in accordance with the described process in the Company Safety Manual (CSM) and/or the Encore Safety Manual (ESM). Investigative assignments may include files relating to: Flight Safety, Airport Safety, Inflight Safety, and Tech Ops Safety.
- Obtains and reviews investigative evidence in support of the investigation, which may include but is not limited to employee interviews, air traffic control recordings, weather data, and/or aircraft maintenance history.
- Liaises with external governing investigative bodies (Transportation Safety Board/NTSB/EASA) and industry partners including but not limited to Transport Canada, Nav Canada, Airport authorities, WestJet (WEN/WS/WSW) contractors.
- Ensures investigation actions are accurately documented in the Company Reporting System (CRS).
- Trending of occurrences in the Company Reporting System (CRS). Notification of specific trends to responsible leadership.
- Recommends, tracks, and verifies the effectiveness of corrective action plans.
- Notifies the certificate holders or delegates immediately if a regulatory non-compliance is discovered during an investigation.
- Assists with and/or conducts risk assessments.
- Liaises with Maintenance Quality Assurance when maintenance compliance issues are detected to ensure they are captured with the appropriate Corrective Action Plan (CAP).
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Senior Manager, Group Audit, Investigations & Safety Data and the Program Manager, Safety Investigations that support the operational safety management system.
Experience & Qualifications:
- 3-6 years of airline experience required. Flight Operations, Technical Operations, Inflight, and/or Airports below-the-wing experience required.
- Holds (or has held) a pilot license, flight dispatcher certificate, or AME license or commensurate knowledge, skills, and experience required.
- Aviation/technical diploma or equivalent combination of education/experience.
- Experience with the Company Reporting System (CRS) is considered a strong asset.
- Strong understanding of safety management principles such as operational risk management processes, investigation practices, safety culture, human and organizational factors analysis, and continuous improvement.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written, and ability to communicate at all levels within the organization as well as external stakeholders.
- Strong relationship-building skills with experience in coordinating the expectations of a diverse set of stakeholders.
- Formal accident/incident investigator training preferred.
- Formal root cause analysis training preferred.
- Strong knowledge of the CARs relating to airline operations, airworthiness, and SMS preferred.
Additional Notes:
- Safety Investigators are required to respond to urgent matters outside of working hours and will be responsible for on-call rotations.
- Travel is expected where required to support investigative activities; the ability to travel to all WestJet destinations is required.
