Job Description:

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the Manager – Safety and Wellness and the technical direction and guidance of the Safety Specialists, the Safety Coordinator supports safety program delivery, provides training coordination, research and safety consulting services to all levels in the organization.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides consultation services of a routine nature for incident prevention and safety management, training, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and associated regulations for all levels of staff in the organization.
  • Conducts research as assigned and prepares reports and operating procedures based on safety best practices.
  • Conducts internal audits, recommends corrective actions, supports administration of the Safety Management System (SMS) software and the SMS program.
  • Coordinates safety training for corporate, departmental, and divisional priorities, including the delivery of training as required.
  • Administers the Hearing Conservation program, through scheduling and administering of hearing assessments. Recommends additional follow-up if required and provides direction on proper hearing protection and use.
  • Processes WSIB correspondence and completes claim information including pay calculations and claim status; provides support to the WSIB Claims Analyst as required.
  • Assists with critical injury or major incident investigations, to determine root cause and provide corrective action recommendations.
  • Participates in and supports the delivery of safety related projects and priorities.
  • Oversees compliance of joint health and safety committee and health and safety representative obligations.
  • Maintains safety-related databases and tracks compliance related data.
  • Conducts and supports environmental and occupational hygiene testing.
  • Provides administrative support to safety-related committees.
  • Performs such other duties as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:

  • Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Sciences, Human Resources or a related field and one year of experience related to the major responsibilities; or
  • Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Sciences, Human Resources, or a related field and three years of experience related to the major responsibilities.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing, with the ability to deliver presentations to a variety of audiences.
  • Superior customer service skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Ability to exercise judgement when dealing with confidential or sensitive issues.
  • Excellent project/time management, analytical/critical thinking, problem solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Must have the ability to manage time effectively and to work under time constraints and changing deadlines.
  • Ability to function and contribute as an effective team member and to work independently.
  • Must be at an intermediate skill level in word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Competent within the meaning of the Occupational Health & Safety Act.

Assets:

  • Knowledge of WSIB claims management and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the ISO 45001 standard.
  • Experience with SAP and Parklane.
  • Previous knowledge and/or working experience with the OHSA and Associated Regulations.
  • Knowledge of structure and functions of City Departments, outside boards and local community groups.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Must undergo a successful Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC).
  • Will be required to travel to various work locations and provide own transportation.
