The Opportunity - Resident Assistant

As a crucial member of the Residence Services team, Resident Assistants (RAs) will have a direct impact on students and their experience in residence. You will regularly plan, facilitate, and organize a variety of programs and events that best serve student needs and interests. You will also support students through their transition into college life. You will have the opportunity to be both mentored and challenged in a way that will set you up for success in your future career. Time management, leadership, communication, and conflict mediation skills are among some of the transferable competencies you will gain from this experience. Contract Dates: August 17th, 2025 - April 17th, 2026 (Subject to Change)
Salary: $15.00/hour

Time Commitment

  1. 40 hours per week (during RA Training)
  2. 17.5 hours biweekly (after RA Training)

Key Job Functions

Supervision of Residence Community

  1. Acts as an upstander in the campus community
  2. Understands and upholds the community living standards and Olds College code of conduct
  3. Possess knowledge of residence operations, campus and community resources and be able to inform and direct students appropriately.
  4. Bring feedback from students forward to inform decision making and operational planning
  5. Assists residents in making connections on campus and making them feel part of the community
  6. Conduct regular building inspections to ensure a timely response to facilities related issues

Programming

  1. Plan, execute, and support residence-wide events to suit the needs and interest of students.
  2. Create bulletin boards and other passive programs during specific times of the year.
  3. Contribute ideas to the biweekly programming calendar and work with other RAs to brainstorm proposals
  4. Promote and advertise events within residence and the broader college community. This includes use of the Olds College Residence social media pages and participating in Residence marketing campaigns (eg. video testimonies).
  5. Work collaboratively with departments outside of residence on supporting campus-wide events.

Meeting and Training Sessions

  1. Attend all staff meetings and training sessions, including:
    1. Weekly Team Meetings (typically held on a weekday evening)
    2. Monthly Food Services Committee meetings
    3. Biweekly meetings with the Residence Life Coordinator
    4. The entirety of Fall Training (end of August)
    5. The entirety of Winter Training (first weekend in January)
    6. All other training sessions as assigned by the Residence Life Coordinator

Administrative

  1. Assist the Residence Services team with September and January move-in days, and pass/fail inspections
  2. Provides support to the front desk: answering questions and queries, retrieving email etc.
  3. Respond to all work related inquiries and correspondence related to the role
  4. Schedule office work hours to address student concerns and support urgent residence tasks.

Education And Experience Requirements

  1. You must be enrolled as an Olds College student, with priority given to programs that run from September-April
  2. Must live in residence for the duration of the contract
  3. Must maintain at least a 2.3 GPA throughout the year
  4. First Aid certification is an asset

  1. Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  2. Demonstrates excellent problem-solving and decision making skills
  3. Demonstrates strong interest in supporting the community
  4. Demonstrates flexibility and willingness to support students and members of the Residence Services team.
  5. Demonstrates commitment to learn and grow new skills, such as conflict mediation and technology.

“Blackout dates” are specific dates and events where attendance is required

First Semester

  1. RA Training: August 17th - August 30th, 2025
  2. September Move-In: Sunday, August 31st, 2025
  3. Orientation Week: September 1st - 7th, 2025
  4. Open House: weekend in October or November
  5. LEAD Conference: October 24th-26th, 2025

Second Semester

  1. Winter Retreat: January 2nd and 3rd, 2026
  2. January Move-In: January 4th, 2026
  3. Frost Week: January 5th-11th, 2026
  4. Level Up Campaign Day: March, 2026
