The Faculty of Nursing invites applications for 2 (two) Research Nurse. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 9 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The LATCH Lab aims to transform health care provision to enhance child health outcomes for vulnerable populations, specifically infants who experience adverse early life exposures. We use mixed methods designs, clinical trials, community engagement, and patient-oriented research to examine the role of infant feeding, specifically provision of breastmilk and donor human milk, in informing health outcomes for infants who experience vulnerability through adverse early life exposures. We routinely engage clinicians, patients/parents, and policy makers in our research to ensure that outcomes are meaningful and understandable to the knowledge user.

As a member of the team, the Research Nurse will report to Dr. Meredith (Merilee) Brockway, Assistant Professor and will coordinate clinical activities linked to the LATCH Lab. This will include providing leadership to the research assistants, liaising with patient/parent partners, supporting project collaborators, championing the research study in the clinical setting, recruiting participants, assisting in data collection, and participating in knowledge translation activities. The Research Nurse will work independently and collaboratively on day-to-day duties, providing direct support to the study lead and clinical staff.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Collaborate with the research team to ensure smooth implementation and execution of the clinical trial. Participate in study-related activities, including participant recruitment, screening, enrollment, and follow-up visits. Ensure compliance with study protocols, ethics guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
  • Act as a resource for research assistants and students on the study. Assist with leading studies with manageable risks and resource requirements. Responsible to coach, mentor, train and advise others in junior roles. Act as an in-scope supervisor for team members.
  • Provide high-quality follow-up to trial participants, ensuring their safety, well-being, and comfort throughout the study. Conduct data extraction from charts, collect samples, and monitor participants for adverse events. Maintain accurate and comprehensive documentation of all clinical interactions.
  • Collect, record, and manage research data in accordance with study protocols and standard operating procedures. Utilize electronic data capture systems and maintain organized and detailed study files. Perform data quality checks and ensure data integrity and study fidelity.
  • Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary research teams, including investigators, study coordinators, research assistants, and laboratory personnel. Communicate regularly with participants, addressing their queries, providing education, and ensuring informed consent.
  • Ensure strict adherence to ethical and regulatory requirements governing clinical trials. Assist in the preparation and maintenance of regulatory files and study-related documentation.
  • Monitor and manage study supplies and equipment, ensuring adequate inventory levels and adherence to storage and handling procedures.
  • Provide updates on project progress including presenting study findings to a variety of audiences including Principal Investigator, study team members, and other collaborators.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA).
  • IBCLC Certification preferred.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of clinical experience in perinatal health.
  • Experience in clinical research, particularly in conducting clinical trials, is highly desirable.
  • Proficient understanding of research methodologies, study protocols, and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong clinical assessment and nursing skills, with attention to detail and accuracy in data collection and documentation.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team-based environment.
  • Knowledge of electronic data capture systems (ConnectCare) and proficiency in using computer applications and software.
  • Understanding of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines and familiarity with ethical considerations in research. Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans - TCPS 2 Certification required.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing project needs and willingness to participate in ongoing professional development. Ability to provide leadership and organization to other members of the team.
  • Strong organizational skills, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent computer literacy: SPSS, NVivo, MS Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Zoom.
