The OCRC is seeking a trained occupational or environmental hygienist to identify, interpret and extract occupational exposure data from existing records from across Ontario. The Research Associate (Exposure) is primarily responsible for conducting research and analysis activities based on project, program, and operational plans in the Occupational Cancer Research Centre. As part of this role, the Research Associate will work both independently and with other staff to advance our understanding of workplace risk factors and exposures and work-related risk of disease in Ontario. By working within a multi-disciplinary team and cross-functional organization, the Research Associate will have the opportunity to gain skills and experience in a variety of initiatives.

Here is what you will be doing:

  1. Provide study, project, program, and operational support as required
  2. Develop the tools, templates and processes required to execute the research and analysis activities, including for grant-funded studies
  3. Identify key sources of information and data
  4. Define the research scope, expected deliverables, and workplan in coordination with the Manager and Scientists
  5. For field studies, conduct testing and sampling (including air, surface, biomonitoring samples) using appropriate methods and measurement equipment
  6. For field studies, recruit and communicate with workplaces and workers as needed
  7. For field studies, be willing and able to travel to sites across Ontario
  8. Undertake detailed research activities, including researching various information sources; and organizing and facilitating working sessions with key stakeholders to gather the required information and data
  9. Review the quality of the information and data collected and analyze this information
  10. Conduct advanced statistical analyses using R, critically interpret results, and present findings in reports and knowledge transfer products for a variety of audiences
  11. Draft reports that summarize research conducted and provide recommendations on actions required, highlighting critical areas for consideration
  12. Contribute to the analysis, interpretation and writing of research articles for publication
  13. If required, assist the Manager and Scientists in presenting the research and analysis to stakeholders
  14. Work with different stakeholders to test or monitor the recommendations and solutions stemming from the analysis
  15. Identify and escalate risks to the Manager and propose recommendations to address the issues
  16. Coordinate advisory groups or committees as needed, and facilitate meetings as required

Here is what you will need to be successful:

  1. Education and Experience
  2. A graduate degree (e.g., MSc) in Occupational or Environmental Hygiene or a related occupational health and safety field
  3. Required 2-3 years of experience or equivalent
  4. Knowledge and Skills
  5. Ability to coordinate all aspects of a research project
  6. Ability to work effectively in a team, but with minimal supervision
  7. Knowledge of occupational hygiene principles and exposure measurement methodologies
  8. Strong research and analytical capabilities
  9. Strong written communication skills with the ability to synthesize complex information
  10. Proficiency in R software for statistical analysis is a strong asset
  11. Demonstrated computer and data management skills with proficiency in MS Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint)

Employment Type: Temporary Full Time (12 month contract)

Salary Band: 4
