Job Summary

The Research Assistant will work within a collaborative and multidisciplinary research team environment to support molecular and advanced pathology cancer research, and be based at the Molecular and Advanced Pathology core (MAPcore) laboratory at Jack Bell Research Centre.

Work Performed

  • Assists planning research project activities, including organizing meetings and documenting meetings.
  • Communicating with diverse clinical and research partners; scheduling sample receival and drop off.
  • Assists with invoicing and communicating the invoices with clients.
  • Maintaining supplies inventory and sending reminders to lab manager for supply purchases.
  • Supports with recording the completed projects data and reports.
  • Labeling test tubes and slides using permanent markers.
  • Files and renames the pathology images in the computer.
  • Attends regular laboratory meetings; updates of the laboratory and facility activities are discussed at regular meetings with research team members.
  • Assist in simple staining such as H&E.
  • Assist with experiments by tissue preparation for processing & sectioning.
  • Preparing tittered Ab solutions for IHCs.
  • Setting up, testing, operating and maintaining standard laboratory and other equipment.
  • Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The Research Assistant will be required to show judgment and decision making which has the potential to impact the MAPcore, and the opportunity for future research collaborators. The exercise of poor judgment and lack of consultation with supervisors could adversely affect the viability and validity of research projects.

Supervision Received

Under overall supervision of the Principal Investigator and the direct supervision of the lab management within the MAPcore.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum of two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to effectively use computer software, such as MS Office, and familiarity with online literature search tools.
  • Any training or familiarity with Histology lab work will be considered as an asset.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to show initiative and judgment.
  • Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
