RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF THE MUHC
The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) is a world-renowned biomedical and hospital research centre. Located in Montreal, Quebec, the Institute is the research arm of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University. The RI-MUHC is supported in part by the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Santé (FRQS).
Position Summary
The project titled ‘Watch your language’: An exploration of how language, narratives, and metaphors shape youth agency, self-perception, and identity in clinical encounters investigates how youth psychiatric patients are impacted by the words used in clinical settings. It involves non-participant observation of clinical encounters between youth patients and their clinicians, followed by focus groups inviting the perspectives of youth with lived-experience of mental illness, parents, and clinicians.
The research assistant will report directly to the Principal Investigator (PI) and will be responsible for the following:
- Research design and data collection: Assisting with ethics applications, project planning and design, recruitment, and data collection.
- Project coordination: Engaging in tasks related to project management and administration, supporting the training and mentoring of other researchers.
- Knowledge translation and dissemination: Co-leading data analysis, assisting with manuscript preparation and submission, and presenting findings at research meetings/conferences.
General Duties
Research design and data collection
- Collaborate with the PI to develop the research protocol and conduct the project, including data collection and analysis.
- Take detailed field notes during non-participant observation data collection.
- Conduct one-on-one interviews with youth patients as part of data collection procedure.
- Conduct literature reviews to support research development.
- Assist in writing and editing Research Ethics Board (REB) for research involving youth patient populations.
- Recruit and screen study participants, including obtaining informed consent.
Project coordination and administration
- Engage in administrative duties related to project management.
- Support the training of other researchers involved in data collection, analysis, and interpretation of results.
- Assist in establishing and coordinating advisory groups and focus groups.
- Monitor and evaluate research processes, identifying challenges and suggesting improvements.
- Facilitate, coordinate, and participate in team research meetings to discuss project updates (including presenting findings, progress reports for research, writing manuscripts, and grants).
Knowledge dissemination and scholarly contributions
- Assist with writing and editing reports, manuscripts, and grant applications.
- Present research findings at internal, local, national, and international conferences.
Education / Experience
Education: Master's Degree in Mental health or other related field.

- Experience conducting research in mental health settings (preferred).
- Experience in preparing and submitting Research Ethics Board (REB) applications (preferred).
Additional Information
Status: Temporary Part-Time, 20 hours per week.
Pay Scale: Commensurate with education and work experience. $48,503.00 - $90,090.00.
Work Shift: Variable Schedule
