The Department of Agriculture is looking to fill the Research and Innovation Specialist – Crops (G4) position in Carman, MB; however, this position may be located in any of our Manitoba Agriculture offices, subject to operational requirements and approval.

Conditions of Employment:

1. Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
2. Must be a member of, or eligible for membership in the Manitoba Institute of Agrologists at the Professional Agrologist level (P.Ag).
3. Must possess and maintain a valid full-stage Manitoba Class 5 driver’s licence.
4. Must be able to occasionally travel within Canada and the US.
5. Must be able to perform work in the field, such as on farms, including occasional overtime.

Qualifications:
Essential:

1. Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy in agricultural genetics/molecular biology/breeding combined with work experience in the Agri-food sector.
2. Demonstrated experience in conducting research.
3. Experience in program development processes, strategic planning, and project management.
4. Demonstrated strong knowledge of agriculture, with a comprehensive understanding of its economic, environmental, and rural development aspects.
5. Experience in agronomy, crops in Western Canada, and crop production.
6. Excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly communicate technical information to a variety of audiences.
7. Excellent written communication skills.
8. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of audiences such as government departments and external committees.
9. Strong organizational skills with the ability to work under pressure and manage multiple deadlines with limited lead time.
10. Experience using statistical analysis software such as Genovix software, MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook) or similar computer applications.
11. Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a team environment.

Duties:
Reporting to the Manager of Research and Innovation, the specialist leads the department’s research program in grain innovation and crop production including genetic improvements. Responsibilities are centered on the development, delivery, and administration of funding programs that advance government priorities in the agriculture sector through grain innovation, crop production, and genetic improvement areas. Work is focused on the interface of industry-government-academia where the specialist brokers, develops, administers, and reports on research projects and transfers knowledge to government and industry on research and development policies, strategies, and programs.
