Job description

The Department of Finance has the mandate to provide leadership and direction to the public service in all areas of finance and human resource management. This mandate includes negotiating major financial arrangements with the federal government, providing analysis and advice to the Financial Management Board, and ensuring that financial and information resources are managed effectively, efficiently, and economically. This mandate also includes the recruitment and retention of a competent public service that is representative of the people it serves and the development of programs and services that effectively serve the human resource needs of the public service.

Job Information

The position is in Yellowknife and is part of the NWT Centre for Geomatics (NWTCG) division, within the Office of the Chief Information Officer branch in the Department of Finance. The Remote Sensing Technician reports to the Remote Sensing Lead Scientist. The NWTCG is the Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) Centre of Excellence for geomatic services, remote sensing, geographic databases and applications, and geographic information systems.

The Remote Sensing team supports the objectives of GNWT departments, boards, and agencies through coordination of remote sensing projects; the development, implementation, and maintenance of operational monitoring programs; coordination and collaboration for applied research, often enabled through the pursuit of third-party funding; and the promotion, education, and outreach on remote sensing and its value to the territory.

Under the guidance of the Remote Sensing Lead Scientist, the incumbent contributes to the implementation of standardized and custom remote sensing raster products and executes scripted procedures to assist in the management and monitoring of natural resources and infrastructure in the NWT.

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:

A recent undergraduate university degree in geomatics, geographic information systems, geography, or remote sensing. Or a post-secondary diploma in geographic information systems or remote sensing with 2 years of related and recent experience.
