About Sojourn House

SojournHouse provides Emergency Shelter and Transitional Housing services to newly arrived refugees coming from all parts of the world. We provide a safe place and an inclusive environment to people who have had the refugee experience. We are dedicated to providing the best possible settlement services and programs that help residents transition and integrate into the community. With decades of experience and being one of the first refugee housing facilities in Toronto, we take pride in being a leading organization in refugee care.

About the Role

We are looking for a Relief Cook to join our Food Service Program at Sojourn House. In this role, you will help provide nutritious meals to refugees in an environment where you’ll be part of a team that values anti-oppression, anti-racism, access, and equity in everything we do. Relief Cooks are called to work as needed to cover shifts on weekends, weekdays, statutory holidays, vacations, and leaves, for full-time and part-time staff.

Skill, Nature and Scope:

  • Demonstrated experience in handling, preparing, cooking, presenting, and storing food.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to maintain teamwork with kitchen staff.
  • Maintain the required food and environmental hygiene and health and safety standards.
  • Ability to stand for up to 5 hours.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with individuals from a variety of socioeconomic and diverse backgrounds.
  • Maintain good public relations with all residents and staff while performing the assigned duties from an anti-racism, access, and equity context.

Experience/ Education:

  • Minimum of 2 years experience/training in a high-volume food services/commercial kitchen environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and use of commercial kitchen equipment required.
  • Community college and/or training in Culinary Arts/Hospitality Services from a recognized institution is an asset.

Knowledge and Competencies:

  • Must have working knowledge of WHMIS requirements applicable to associated precautions in a commercial kitchen environment.
  • Current and valid City of Toronto Public Health Food Handling Certificate.
  • WHMIS and CPR/First Aid certifications preferred.
  • The position requires physical abilities for lifting (up to 50 lbs.), bending, and moving food product(s) from deliveries into organized storage and kitchen equipment.

Working Conditions:

  • The Relief Cook works in a commercial kitchen.
  • The position will use commercial kitchen equipment for their work.

Other:

Rate: $20.84/hour (2025 rate)

Hours: Replacement Shifts (7.5 hours) 7am-2:30pm or 12:30 – 8pm, Monday – Sunday.
