We are looking for a Reinsurance Claims Manager who will support in managing the capital effectively from a Reinsurance perspective by being responsible for the reinsurance claims presentation and collection of amounts recoverable under various reinsurance contracts so as to improve reinsurance recoveries. This individual will assist in the management of counterparty relations to ensure that reputational risk is minimized. You will also participate in Corporate initiatives representing the Reinsurance department.

What you'll do:
  • Run the reinsurance claims function effectively to ensure that:

(i) reinsurance recoverables are accurately identified, appropriately presented on timely basis and effectively collected within reasonable time after submission of the claims to reinsurers;

(ii) counterparty risks are effectively managed including identifying and following up on any reinsurers in financial difficulty;

(iii) supervise policies and review procedures within the Reinsurance Claims section as applicable to ensure they are effective, efficient and followed;

(iv) maintain a database of ceded reinsurance contracts and counterparties with updated status of the financial standing of the counterparties;

(v) staff are appropriately coached and mentored to enable them to grow within the area and Company.

  • Work with legal, claims or actuarial resources, either internal or external to the company, to address recovery issues;

  • Represent the Reinsurance Department and Aviva, as required, within the Company and to External Parties;

  • Support efforts in assessing system alternatives for the reinsurance area by working closely with IT and other functions as required;

  • In conjunction with the VP, lead change and process efficiencies within the department;

  • In conjunction with the VP manage the change program and ensure deliverables are met on time;

  • Ensure standard process is adopted and technology is used appropriately to ensure the efficient operations of the area.

What you'll bring:
  • Business related University degree;

  • Professional Accounting or Insurance designation;

  • Demonstrated ability (5 years minimum) in reinsurance or 7 years of claims management and a solid working knowledge of reinsurance;

  • People leadership experience is a plus;

  • Expert experience with Microsoft Office Suite, and mainframe accounting applications;

  • Experience with driving and implementing change;

  • Project management experience an asset;

  • Effective communicator with excellent English (written and oral) and interpersonal skills;

  • Detail oriented with a strong technical ability;

  • Critical thinking skills;

  • Solid knowledge of insurance and reinsurance principles and products;

  • Ability to understand and apply, at a detailed level, reinsurance contract wording;

  • A working knowledge of the regulatory requirements as it pertains to reinsurance;

  • An understanding of legal frameworks in Canada, UK and US with respect to contract law or willingness to learn;

  • Ability to lead change;

  • IT savvy;

  • Tactical, effective at execution of project plans and deliverables;

  • Strategic problem solver;

  • Hands on, proactive and process oriented.
