Position Summary:

The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) is a professional caregiver who is responsible and accountable for the quality of patient care based on the current Interdisciplinary Standards at St. Mary’s General Hospital and the Professional Standards for Registered Nurses and Registered Practical Nurses in Ontario. The RPN provides direct care to assigned patients and practices independently when the patient’s condition is less complex such that the outcome is predictable. The RPN collaborates with the Registered Nurse in patient situations that are beyond the RPN scope of practice.

Position Requirements:

  • Graduate of a Registered Practical Nurse Program acceptable to the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • A member in good standing of the College of Nurses of Ontario and hold a current Registered Practical Nurse Certificate of Competence.
  • Current BCA - Basic Cardiac Arrhythmia course or commitment to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Recent experience in physical assessments; medication course; possess current BCLS certification; and can meet the St. Mary's Hospital requirements for I.V. therapy and catheterization.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary patient care team.
  • Strong organizational and public relation skills are essential.
  • Knowledge of Charting by Exception and Nursing Diagnosis (as per the College of Nurses standards).
  • Positive work record; a good attendance record; excellent interpersonal skills and a level of physical fitness appropriate for the physical demands of the position.
  • Ability to perform their function in accordance with prescribed standards that recognize the priority of Patient Safety and the delivery of the highest standard of Quality Care.
  • Be a supportive team member willing to work in a collaborative, civil, enthusiastic way promoting a safe and positive workplace environment.
