ABOUT THE ROLE

The Regional Laboratory Supervisor’s goal is to maintain the Regional Laboratory accreditations and function for the design and support of asphalt mixture and binder products across Lafarge’s Western Canadian asphalt business units. The candidate will be familiar with AASHTO and ASTM standards and will be required to apply engineering practices to design Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) that will provide an economical and durable solution for Lafarge’s asphalt businesses.

The candidate will be required to provide their previously acquired leadership skills to the staff directing them as needed to test asphalt mixtures and binders. The selected individual will be in charge of maintaining the Quality Management System (QMS) to maintain AASHTO and CCIL laboratory certification. The candidate will be familiar with Marshall and Superpave design systems and Performance Graded (PG) system for asphalt binders. New product development will engage and challenge the individual’s technical and leadership skills.

WHAT YOU’LL ACCOMPLISH

  • Support asphalt mix design and R&D initiatives, including the development, optimization, and testing of various mix types (e.g., Marshall, Superpave, SMA, OGFC) and relevant additives or modifiers.
  • Perform and oversee Quality Control and Quality Assurance testing, ensuring adherence to ASTM, AASHTO, CSA, CCIL, MTO, and Lafarge standards and best practices.
  • Train, mentor, and supervise QA/QC Technicians in both laboratory and field testing procedures, calibration practices, and NBTC certification preparation.
  • Manage and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring calibration, repairs, and procurement of new equipment and consumables are conducted per specifications.
  • Lead and contribute to quality improvement initiatives, developing and refining operational procedures to enhance product performance and cost-efficiency.
  • Analyze asphalt cement rheology properties, including BBR, RTFO, PAV, DSR, Penetration, and Viscosity testing, to support product development and compliance.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date test records, databases, and QA/QC documentation, providing summaries, reports, and updates to the Quality Assurance Manual as required.
  • Conduct internal audits, management reviews, and participate in round robin testing programs, including AASHTO/AMRL and Ontario MTO, to ensure lab proficiency and consistency.
  • Ensure communication of safety requirements as it relates to other site employees and maintain familiarity with MSDS specs, the different aspects of the emergency response and remain up-to-date on all lab emergency procedures.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to communicating, improving and adhering to health, safety and environmental policies in all work environments and areas. Promote a culture of safety and exhibit these behaviors.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Education: College Diploma or University Degree
Field of Study Preferred: Civil Technical Program or Civil Engineering
Required Work Experience: At least 5 years of experience
Required Training/Certifications: CET/EIT
Additional Requirements:

  • Technically sound in all facets of asphalt hot mix quality control and quality assurance testing.
  • Strong working knowledge of Excel spreadsheets, Microsoft Word and Power Point.
  • Familiar with Occupational Health & Safety requirements and safe work procedures.
  • Believe in continuous improvement and will act accordingly.
  • Have excellent communication skills.
  • Be a team player, positive and with a can-do attitude.
  • Be able to perform with minimal supervision.
  • Enjoy analyzing situations and making decisions accordingly.
  • Have a friendly and constructive customer service attitude.
  • Successful candidates must adhere to all safety protocols and proper use of Holcim approved Personal Protection Equipment ("PPE"), including but not limited to respirators. Employees that are required to wear respirators must be clean shaven where the respirator seal meets the face in order to pass the qualitative and quantitative fit tests.
