General Position Summary & Responsibilities

The Recycling Operations Facility Supervisor reports directly to the Recycling Operations Facility Manager and has a primary focus on driving, guiding, and influencing the support mechanisms that streamline and coordinate the overall operational effectiveness and efficiency of the assigned operations. The Recycling Operations Facility Supervisor focuses specifically on: overall Health & Safety and Environmental compliance; quality control; maintenance and accuracy of all material (FE and NF); appropriate inventory management; timely processing of administrative paperwork; efficient work prioritization and scheduling; continuous improvement for the facilities general maintenance, administration, and management of Production employees, including continuous training and development.

This position operates within flexible parameters. The primary goal of this position is to achieve excellence in all facets of facility and operations management. Providing the highest quality product safely, effectively, and efficiently decreases accidents and errors and increases profits.

Essential Functions

  1. Environmental and Health & Safety (H&S)
    1. Supports overall H&S issues within the facility by working closely with the regional safety support.
    2. Ensures Environmental compliance in accordance with company and provincial policies.
    3. Monitors H&S programs administered by MRB H&S department.
    4. Following an incident or accident, instructs personnel on Corrective Action Plans in accordance with policy.
    5. Monitors H&S and Environmental Compliance for all assigned locations to report any deficiencies and/or issues to the Recycling Operations Facility Manager, General Manager, Regional Director, H&S Department and/or Environmental Manager.
    6. Provides a safe environment for all employees, customers, and visitors.
  2. Operational Performance & Best Management Practices
    1. Oversees operations in all departments.
    2. Ensures that negotiated production levels are met and maintained for all departments.
    3. Forecasts monthly production with the Recycling Operations Facility Manager.
    4. Reviews maintenance procedures and record keeping for all production equipment.
    5. Provides accurate and valid operational data.
  3. Equipment & Maintenance
    1. Monitors equipment needs for the facility.
  4. Inventory & Quality Control
    1. Maintains accurate material inventories, keeping in compliance with all internal controls.
    2. Monitors assigned yard inventories.
    3. Ensures that reports of any off grade/ off spec materials are discussed with the Manager prior to shipment in order to eliminate quality consumer complaints, avoid downgrades, and eliminate claims.
    4. Ensures all storage of finished goods is done in compliance with internal controls already set in place.
    5. Implements and maintains an effective, documented Quality Control program.
    6. Works with internal and customer specs for materials.
  5. Administrative Management
    1. Identifies and spearheads any necessary training for all personnel.
    2. Ensures proper reporting is in place and being utilized for all production departments.
    3. Manages all personnel by setting up an appropriate management structure.
    4. Follows HR guidelines for status changes, salary changes, goal setting, annual reviews/evaluations, and payroll issues.
  6. Special Projects
    1. Performs other special projects as assigned.

Internal Control Responsibilities

Supports the Company’s Internal Control process which includes understanding, communicating, and complying with defined internal controls as well as suggesting modifications to the policies, procedures, and controls to better relate to the business.

Communicates upward problems in operations, noncompliance with the code of conduct, or other policy violations or illegal actions.

Takes ownership and responsibility for ensuring all internal controls managed within the scope of this job position, including completion by any direct reports, are being performed and signed off on a monthly basis through the internal controls checklist.

Supervisory Responsibility

The Recycling Operations Facility Supervisor directly supervises the facility team, non-management hourly staff.

Interpersonal Contacts

Internal contacts are by phone and in person with Metals Recycling Business personnel and various management level personnel. External contacts are by phone, e-mail and in person with potential and existing customers, other companies within the industry, and governmental agencies.

Job Conditions

Workload is cyclical and can present significant time pressures when strict adherence to deadlines is critical. Workload is often reactive and cannot be anticipated or planned for. Often many extra hours are required, weekend, weekday, and holidays. Exposure to physical operations at metal recycling yards; it is necessary to walk/climb in active industrial yards with uneven surfaces and to out-of-the-way areas.

Occasional exposure to inclement weather conditions and travel is required. Work pressure can be substantial during peak times, requiring considerable adaptability; disturbances of workflow, and/or irregularities in work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis. Regular overtime is required. Offsite work involves visiting and/or at other Schnitzer locations.

Physical Activities Required To Perform Essential Functions

Ability to: sit or stand for extended periods of time, up to 6 hours per day. Position requires individual to: stand, walk, and/or otherwise move around a recycling operations facility environment. Some computer work is necessary requiring visual acuity to perform close detail work. Must have the ability to communicate in a professional manner by phone, e-mail and in person with all levels of internal personnel and business contacts.

Qualifications

Minimum of 3-5 years previous experience in recycling facility operations or heavy industrial setting, and familiarity with physical operations and personnel. Post secondary education/certifications preferred; courses in business/operations management would be an asset. Project management experience or specialized knowledge a plus. This position requires possession of a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive an automobile.

Knowledge of operations; leadership, analytical, organization, good communication, good mathematical skills; and intermediate computer competency. Ability to: apply principles of logical thinking to a wide range of practical problems; deal with a large number of variables and determine a specific course of action.
