ABI Day Service Recreation Therapist Assistant (RTA)

Location(s):

Coordinated Care Café / Community (Peterborough), and Lindsay

Reports to:

ABI Day Service Supervisor, Recreation Therapist(s)

Summary:

The Brain Injury Association Peterborough Region serves the four counties of Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes, Haliburton, and Northumberland. The ABI Day Service RTA is responsible for supporting clients living with acquired brain injuries through the provision of person-centered recreation and recreation therapy services. These services include onsite services in Peterborough or City of Kawartha Lakes, online virtual programming, and mobile adult day programming supports for clients in their home.

This role will also work with the BIAPR team to increase the overall quality of life for clients living with ABI and identified characteristics of Dementia. Job Duties:

The ABI Day Service RTA carries out the duties of the ABI Day Service(s) under the ABI Day Service Supervisor as a part of the ABI Day Service team. The RTA works under the direction of the Recreation Therapist(s) to deliver recreation therapy services assisting in the delivery of goal-oriented programs and services to meet the leisure related needs of clients.

The RTA effectively:

  • Develops and implements programs, observes and reports on program and client progress.
  • Provides input on recreation therapy program delivery, enabling the Recreation Therapist to conduct assessments and develop intervention plans.
  • Respects and protects the rights of clients, including their right to independence and privacy.

Responsibilities:

  • Works with individuals to define professional role and develop a strong therapeutic relationship.
  • Provides support, skill teaching, and facilitation to foster maximum individual independence with client programs and activities.
  • Prepares reports and maintains comprehensive statistics and documentation.
  • Advocates and raises awareness of acquired brain injury.
  • Participates in discussions related to best practices with team members.
  • Engages in meaningful interactions with members using a person-centred, strength-based approach.
  • Travels to client homes to deliver program supplies or provide in-home programming.
  • Assists members with personal needs such as medication and transfers.
  • Collaborates in the development of therapeutic recreation programming.
  • Adheres to confidentiality policies and safety protocols.

Qualifications Required:

  • Completion of post-secondary education in Therapeutic Recreation preferred.
  • Additional training in acquired brain injury is an asset.
  • Strong communication, technology, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in the Arts is an asset.
  • Satisfactory police record check and vulnerable sector screening.

Work Conditions:

  • Works within ABI Day Service program sites and client homes.
  • Must be able to work in an unpredictable environment and possess good time management skills.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: From $20.00 per hour

Expected hours: 37.5 per week

Benefits: Casual dress

Education: DCS / DEC (required)

Experience: recreational therapy: 1 year (required), Recreation and Leisure: 1 year (required)

Licence/Certification: First Aid Certification (required), Degree/Certificate in Therapeutic Recreation (required)
