About the Role

The Recreation Therapist reports to the Therapeutic Recreation Manager / Recreation Manager or designate. This role assesses, develops and implements person centered therapeutic recreation programs to meet the holistic needs and interests of persons served, collaborating with a variety of teams within the community to provide goal orientated outcomes.

Responsibilities

1. Be an engaged collaborative team player, developing and maintaining professional relationships that support and strengthen the organizational culture and purpose.
2. Perform assessments of resident leisure functioning, strengths and limitations upon admission and as required.
3. Develop and implement recreation and leisure programs for individuals and groups according to practice based evidence and current trends.
4. Support the completion of monthly calendars to reflect all domains and function levels to reflect resident’s needs, interests and abilities.
5. Assist and evaluate programs or protocols as required to meet person centered goals, needs and operational requirements.
6. Assist with admission and orientation of new residents and tenants.
7. Report and document resident progress, function and program participation.
8. Collaborate with interdisciplinary team, resident and family to prepare for pre / post resident care conferences. Attend as required.
9. Provide quarterly and annual assessments based on standards of practice and requirements of MDS-RAI and care planning timeframes.
10. Motivate and encourage resident participation through initiatives such as Resident Council to ensure resident needs and rights are being maintained and heard.
11. Assist with student and volunteer placements, orientation and evaluation when required.
12. Actively participate in orientation of new staff, community programs, meetings, committees and educational in-services.
13. Maintain a safe environment for residents, family and staff, through accident prevention, knowledge of emergency procedures and regulations, the safe use of supplies and equipment and reporting when repairs are necessary, and utilizing infection control procedures.
14. Develop and maintain relationships and promote Recreation Therapy with external partnerships and agencies to enhance resident programming.
15. Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications & Skills:

1. A two-year Recreation or equivalent Diploma.
2. Two years related experience in Long Term Care setting preferred.
3. Experience programming for Alzheimer Disease and related Dementia’s is an asset.
4. Member or eligibility for British Columbia Therapeutic Recreation Association (BCTRA).
5. Valid First Aid Level 1 Certificate with CPR required.
6. Serving It Right Certificate.
7. Food Safe Level 1 Certificate an asset.
8. Valid Class 4 (Unrestricted) BC Driver’s License as required.
9. All successful applicants must pass the vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check applicable to Provincial guidelines.
10. Ability to push, pull, stoop, crouch, lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Must be able to work with cleaners, detergents and other cleaning equipment.
11. Ability to read, write and speak English proficiently and understand verbal and written instructions.
12. Good interpersonal and organizational skills.
13. Intermediate computer skills including Word, Publisher, and Outlook.
