Summary:

Summer programs provide children ages 4-12 the opportunity to improve self-esteem, motor skills, creativity, and social skills through a variety of crafts, arts, and physical activities as well as excursions to local places of interest.

Role:

Reporting to a Supervisor, Recreation Services the Planning and Support Coordinator - Summer position is responsible for assisting with administrative and logistical coordination of all summer camp and playground locations offered through the City of London. This casual position works as part of a team in a public facing fast paced environment ensuring programs are run efficiently to meet the needs of the participants while providing excellent customer service to City of London patrons and volunteers.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist Program Supervisors in the support of daily operations including administrative, inventory, and program management.
  • Assist and oversee, coach, schedule and evaluate Day Camp and Playground staff.
  • Support Summer Coordinators and frontline staff through developing various training programs including June front line training and All Kids in Camp inclusion training.
  • Plan, develop, and lead the delivery of program activities and special events for ages 4-12 in accordance with Child and Youth Agenda priority areas. Events may include multi-camp field trip events and other large-scale special events.
  • Assist in the interviewing and hiring of frontline staff.
  • Oversee relief staff (floater) shift scheduling, staff certification tracking and assist with contract distribution.
  • Organize, purchase, monitor and maintain program supplies and inventory for all summer programs.
  • Create and distribute program promotional materials.
  • Collect records on a regular basis for registration, attendance, safety checks, accident reports, operational evaluations and program evaluations, program expenses and trips.
  • Help ensure the care, safety and security of employees and participants.
  • Communicate with parents/caregivers of participants as required.
  • Use appropriate behaviour modification techniques when assisting in the supervision of participants.
  • Work well independently, and with a team, with both internal and external partners.
  • Facilitate and attend regular staff meetings as required.
  • Ensure all City of London policies and practices are adhered to.
  • Comply with the City of London School Age Recreation Program Guidelines and HighFIVE practices.
  • Maintain corporate standards of customer service and administrative procedures related to areas of responsibility, including but not limited to cash handling, program standards, etc.
  • Prepare and present at meetings and special events.
  • Prepare reports as required (weekly program delivery and HighFIVE Quest).
  • Undertake special departmental projects as assigned (e.g. marketing, special events).
  • Support the Camps on TRACKS peer-mediated social skills program across all programs.
  • Assist with administrative organization, email correspondence, scheduling, and other duties as assigned.
  • Strong behaviour management is necessary.
  • Experience working with campers to build their independence and social skills.
  • Strong coaching and mentoring skills.
  • Offer critical and timely feedback to ensure optimal camper safety and experience.
  • Contagious, positive attitude.
  • Ensure high program standards and best practice for healthy development and play in relation to HighFIVE practices.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service skills and a positive and professional attitude when communicating with participants, parents, the public, and co-workers.
  • Demonstrate commitment to anti-racism, anti-oppression, and human rights through practices and interactions with community partners, employees and individuals and support programs and initiatives that reflect this commitment.
  • Demonstrate commitment and adherence to Health and Safety legislation and programs; actively promote a culture of safety.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum three years’ experience in a children’s summer camp or playground program environment with some leadership, supervisory, program planning and organizational experience preferred.
  • Experience with children with special needs and/or behavioural challenges is an asset.
  • HIGH FIVE - Healthy Child Development Certification and QUEST Certification (prior to the start of the program)
  • Standard First Aid Certificate (prior to the start of the program)
  • Vulnerable Sector Police Check (VSPC) (prior to the start of the program)
  • Valid drivers’ license and access to a vehicle is required.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrate interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Strong communication skills – verbal, written, and oral.
  • Knowledge of and ability to demonstrate behaviour modification techniques.
  • Second language is an asset (please indicate on resume)
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to be flexible and travel throughout the City as required by Supervisor.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software including publisher, excel and word and Xplor. Recreation registration software (preferred).
  • Ability to demonstrate strong communication (verbal, written and oral), high energy, enthusiasm and continued positive attitude.
  • High level of comfort in fast paced public facing environments.

Other Information:

  • Wage: $21.00 per hour
  • Contract is full-time Monday, May 5, 2025, to Friday, August 29, 2025
  • Mandatory training dates will occur in the month of June on evenings weekends, as needed. Details will be shared with successful candidates.
